This beautifully illustrated book points the traveler to the multiple historic sites of the Civil War. Twenty states are represented in the volume. Each chapter begins with a discussion the the state's overall political and military position in the war. Accompanying this introductory information is a map of the state that pinpoints the areas of interest. Battlegrounds, cemeteries, museums, homes, prisons, and monuments are visited, and each has a listing of addresses, hours of operation, admission fees, if any, and a short descriptions of what can be found at the site.

Julie Shively is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, a veteran C-141 pilot, and a former member of the Air Force's prestigious Eighty-ninth Airlift Wing. She holds a master's degree in education and teaches math and science. The author lives in Atlanta with her husband, a retired Marine.

My husband and I will be traveling from California to the Civil War sites and needed some basic information. This book has aided my husband in planning our trip. He states it is a great resource book.

Anyone interested in traveling to CW sites should have this book. Great illustrations and descriptions of major sites without being bogged down with too many details about the battles that you can read elsewhere. Each state has their own section, so you can easily flip to whatever state is going to be your destination. As a bonus, there is a photo of Chalmette Battlefield, which was part of the Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812.) I would have never thought of going there without this book, but I made a side trip there while in New Orleans. The Battlefield site is significant because the antebellum home of a relative of PGT Beauregard sits near the grounds. The author also has a great book on American Revolution sites. It's similar in nature to this one.
