Book Description

April 1998
Like the song says, one can be the loneliest number. But the author of this versatile and practical guide says it isn't so with dozens of field-tested ideas for the one-computer classroom that are both manageable and flexible. Classroom management, recordkeeping, technical issues, and hardware and software selection are the focus of one chapter of the book. Another is dedicated to specific word processing, database, and spreadsheet activities that can be done with only one classroom computer. Knowledge organizers-software that helps teachers and students make sense of isolated information-form the basis of a third chapter. The final chapter addresses software formats and packages for teaching in specific content areas. The perfect answer to one of education's biggest questions.

From Chapter 1: One computer is a lonely machine when the teacher's goal is to have everyone write with word processing. Keyboarding cannot be taught efficiently in the one-computer classroom. But neat things can be done with just one computer--things that actually work better with only one computer. You may already know some of them, but perhaps this book can offer you some new ideas or provide guidelines for thinking about using one computer. If you have two computers, this book will be twice as valuable. You can run two of these activities at once or do the same activity on two computers in half the time.

Teachers often tell me that their one computer is used mainly for enrichment, for students who finish their assigned work early and need to occupy themselves while the rest of the class is still working. However, we can do more than that with one computer in the classroom. With a little attention to detail, teachers can help students understand that computer use is part of the curriculum.

Don't bother with a sequel. This book is sooooo outdated, there's really no hope. And the first one wasn't that great anyway.
