It was great to see crochet enter the 21st century! This is a collection of really fun garments that belie the conception thatcrochet has to be stodgy and old fashioned. Sassy little tops, very wearable shawls, a gorgeous wedding tunic - many designs I want to make. Crochet garments don't have to be clunky, and this is the theme of this book. I love the youtthful look of many of the projects. Garments are from several of the top designers: Doris Chan, Nancy Nehring, Tammy Hildebrand, Margaret Hubert --and thank goodness, there are not any granny squares or ripple designs here! My favorite is a spectacular necklace crocheted with thin copper wire with beads added.
Yes, many designs are variations of mini skirts and barely-there lace halter tops, but not every pattern is young and trendy. The 4-piece Mexican Heritage outfit made in thread is simply stunning! It consists of a shawl, a short-sleeved top, a skirt, and a pair of wide-leg pants, all trimmed with colorful circles along the borders. You can mix and match the ensamble for a unique ethnic look that works well for all ages. There's several jewlery patterns, too, including a copper wire necklace.and a fashionable beaded necklace. And vests galore--my favorite is a modern version of the 70's open-mesh style with solid appliqued flowers and there's also a stunning modular vest, a cropped vest crocheted with several different novelty yarns, and a cold-weather vest made from suede yarn. The three featured bathing suits may be geared for younger ladies, but the Floral Cascade top, the Cute Capelet, and the Spun Sugar Cocoon are approprite for all ages. And all the famous designers are featured in this book--Doris Chan, Dora Ohrenstein, Tammy Hildebrand, Margaret Hubert, Marty Miller, Vashiti Braha, Judith Solomon, and more.
This is the kind of pattern book you'll want to keep going back to, perhaps perusing the designs while sipping a cup of tea and trying to decide what to make first. And each time you do so, you'll probably change your mind as a pattern seems to call out, "Make me first!" That's the fun you can expect when you buy this innovative book.I highly recommend it for the young--and the young at heart!
The book is dated and ... oh dear, hasn't modelling changed (for the better)!!! But the patterns are still totally relevant.
There is an interested and varied selection of yarns which nicely add to the variety of these 35 patterns. There are no repeats, you are truly getting 35 different garments and looks.
