5.0 out of 5 stars Gota have book if you are just getting into gem identification
If you want to break into gem identification this book is the only place to start, and I mean that quite literally.
I looked long and hard on the internet to see if I could avoid buying a book, and I couldn't. Then I looked for
the best one to start with, and there really were no other contenders.

With all that said, it goes farther into it than...

2.0 out of 5 stars Too technical very few pictures or diagrams
I did not like this book. It is not what I expected. There are just a few photographs in the center which do not cover most gemstones and the rest of the book is very technical. I was looking for a book for the layman to help me with amateur collecting and to identify family pieces and things I may come across in shopping. I do not wish to go back to university for a...

If you want to break into gem identification this book is the only place to start, and I mean that quite literally.
I looked long and hard on the internet to see if I could avoid buying a book, and I couldn't. Then I looked for
the best one to start with, and there really were no other contenders.

With all that said, it goes farther into it than I wanted to go. If you want, you can follow this book right up
to the doors of starting on your gemologist license study.

However, even if you are only interested in buying jewerly, and not identifying gems, you really should read
this book, as it will really open your eyes. You will be able to skip the technical parts and read the really
interesting things like how long ago simulated gems started appearing, and what was considered gems early on. It
was quite a surprise to me.

All in all I found the book both interesting and useful.

This book is better geared for more advanced experienced advocates, who have a lab or are interested in setting up a lab. However, I am wanting to get up to this level...so I will be using it as I pursue my education and hobby equipment. You really should have a working vocabulary of gemology before reading this book.

The book arrived timely and great condition. I'm very please with the quality and service of the provider. Thank you.

I got this book to help with identifying my new Gems. The best part about it is that it has detailed instructions on how to use Gem identifying equipment. It also has charts on what you will see using the equipment. It's exactly what I was looking for and I recommend it to other people beginning their Gem collections.

Although it took over 2 months to get here, I am delighted to finally own this book.
This book is spot-on when trying to separate facts from fiction whilst testing gemstones with only a limited number of test gadgets available at ones' disposal.
An other strength of this book - in comparison with other gemmological publications - is the fact that it has been written in plain understandable English, and does not waffle on endlessly about scientific stuff, irrelevant to the majority of gem enthusiasts.
Finally I love chapter on the correct use of lighting required for gemtesting.
