5.0 out of 5 stars Cool., June 30, 2003

This review is from: Identikit (Audio CD)
BURNING AIRLINES rocks. Their second effort IDENTIKIT, is a cool mix of punk, pop, and rock that is both inventive and crisply original. Great harmonies mesh sweetly with cruchy guitar, distorted bass, and metronomicly askew drums to create short, punchy songs that are both complex and easy on the ears. This is one band who knows how to rock with authority and both CDs in their arsenal are highly recommended. Way better than anything mainstream, this is one act who have a true identity and they have wrapped it up for you in a nice little kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!, July 9, 2002

Remarkable vocal and guitar melodies --- jarring and catchy at once. Like a heavy, gritty version of XTC.

5.0 out of 5 stars demanding listeners demand BURNING AIRLINES!, September 24, 2001

I can't say enough good things about this band or their body of work (2 CD's and counting happily!) Plus, after having seen them live last night in a way-small venue in Fort Collins CO (a show they played on their "day off" from their touring schedule as they described it), I can verify that they ROCK in person too!
Their music has everything to satisfy the most demanding listener. So buy their CD's and do your part to support these guys (and maybe they'll be able to afford a better "science project" style fold-out CD-and-Tee-shirt-tabletop-display-thingy!) J. Robbins writes some of the coolest lyrics I have heard. His vocabulary is really expansive. He writes lyrics based upon the way words sound (which is really cool). The words that he uses fit the music so well. The music is really put together well. If you want to listen to something with great groove (in a sweet Shiner essence) you've come to the right album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius...They give you so much more..., November 30, 2005
This review is from: Identikit (Audio CD)
J. Robbins is a master of hard rock with the DC mathy style. His voice is one of the most unique I've heard in a long time. I only wish that they could have kept the energy going, I know that their next album would have blown this one away...Ah but Channels migh fill the void. Also one of the best live performers ever, if only the show I saw had more people who understood that they were seeing. Anyhow, don't let this gem slip away...

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, October 8, 2003

The first half of this album is pretty much flawless. Actually, more than that, I'd say through Paper Crowns. After that, it kind of gets old, until Dear Hilary. Still, this a great CD and definitely worth the purchase price. The best tracks are Outside the Aviary, A Lexicon, A Song With No Words, Paper Crowns, and the Surgeon's House. Dear Hilary is also good, and the idea behind it is, I think, a good one. It's my favorite of the Scott Richter songs, although I haven't heard all of them. The best part of the album, not surprisingly, is the bass, but the rest of it is good too. Also, I'm sure if you're here you don't need to hear this, but Jawbox is worth it to check out as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Post Jawbox Genius, April 3, 2002
By

This album is incredible. "A Lexicon" is a splintered and beautiful rocker; my personal fave. "Dear Hillary" and "A Song with No Words" are jagged, chrystalline ballads. The rest of the songs are equally amazing. A great buy for later Jawbox fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, May 19, 2001

You simply must buy this CD. The first BA CD, Mission:Control!, was amazing, and this CD picks up where that one left off and then some. Songs like "Outside the Aviary," are similar to somethings from the first CD, but most songs are really different from the first album. The lyrics are first rate, the singing is fabulous, and J. Robbins guitar playing is simply amazing; he's never played better. In fact, all of the instruments are top notch, the drums and bass are awesome. On the whole this CD is above and beyond the "emo" category it gets lumped into; it's SO much more....

5.0 out of 5 stars some great jams form ex jawbox jay robbins(marvelous), January 8, 2002
By
This review is from: Identikit (Audio CD)
.fronted buy j.robbins(a.k.a jaw box)and producer to some of the likes like( blue tip).this album is a mismatch of jazz progessive funk pop punk .(if you can imagine all that in the same album )but its all here .its definatly on the same page of there first album.so being a fan of jaw box i would easily say that this is a lot better then the last couple of there albums.taking the modern music production thing and useing it very nicely .the playing on the other hand is mind boggleing .i wonder if they play this tight live??so to sum thing up i give this a 5 star rateing for just being some of the best music i have heard in a while.it took a couple of listens only because my mind has been in tune with such bad music lately .but after this album there shined a little hope in things to come maybe on the radio!!!(but probably not)

5.0 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE, May 13, 2001
By
This review is from: Identikit (Audio CD)
While it's hard to compare this to their first album, it is easy to see the musical genius of Burning Airlines throughout this cd. While their first cd exhibited stunning emo-type melodic structures, this one is a huge blend of many different types of music within that same emo structure. There's everything from jazz to reggae to funk....and it's all blended with stunning lyrics and formidable instrument control (everyone in the band is at the top of their field for their respective instruments). Buy it now.
