5.0 out of 5 stars Magic, August 30, 2005

This is an astounding recording. After wearing out at least 2 vinyl copies in the 70's, I was absolutely ecstatic finding this released on CD. But then again, I have always included Airto in my top 2 or 3 muscians of all time .. along with Hendrix. Go figure.

With some of Airto's usual suspects including Hugo Fatturuso on keyboards, David Amaro on guitar, the ever beautiful and magicical Flora Purim, and Raul de Soza on trombone settling in with American musicians like Herbie H of course, John Heard and John Williams playing their asses off on bass, and even Louis Johnson from Brother's Johnson playin' slap .. think he might have been only 19 or 20 years old at the time .. topped off with the true musical genius of Egberto Gismonti on keyboards and guitar, these guys put together some truly powerful and moving music. Magic .. really. Not an overly long recording by total time, it nonetheless holds up to the test of time.

For me, there are passages that transcend superior musicians simply playing great. Like many of Hendrix's early recordings, for me, these songs have an undefinable magic that moves me as much as any music anytime anywhere.

As an extra note, check out Egberto's piano and guitar .. all I can say is wow! This guy is on another planet .. like Airto, like Hendrix .. beautiful powerful emotion with licks like none other. Hope you enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Airto Calls the Spirits: Oshun, Oggun, Chango, Yemaya!, September 23, 2004

This is an ecstatic work of genius.

Airto's had more musical lives than a jungleful of cats. In the 60s and 70s he took jazz to South America to rediscover its African roots. There was his work with Miles, Stanley T, Wayne, Chick, Keith and Ron and Deodato and Billy and Stanley C and George D, and Hubert, and George B. There was Return to Forever. Then Flora broke big. They did some brilliant work with Santana. But Airto really comes into his own as the frontman -- that's when the magic happens.

And nowhere does Airto's fire and inspiration reach the hallucinatory levels it does here. Airto the performer brings an alechemy that pulls the players around him into vision and his groove in a way that is -- well, he's a brujo, a loa, a shaman.

As if that weren't enough, Airto has two secret weapons on Identity. On is Herbie Hancock's production(Do you get the picture? Yes, we see). Some recording executive someday will make somebody a ton of money and her or his careeer by collecting and reissuing everything Herbie produced. And there's another keyboard genius, the great, if little known, Uruguayan keyboard player Hugo Fattoruso.

Just because the two other reviews omit to tell you that Wayne Shorter is on it too...His first participation on record since creating Weather Report! Enjoy ! (for my taste, I prefer the precedent album : "Virgin Land")
