5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book by an extremely talented author!, December 26, 1999
I don't see anything posted as to what this book is about, so here is the info from the back cover: Navy SEAL Mitchell Shaw woke one morning with no clue as to who he was. And the items hidden in his possession were no help--an address, along with a .22 caliber side arm. The address led him to the Lazy 8 Ranch--and its beautiful manager, Becca Keyes, who made him believe he might have a future, even if he wasn't sure about his past.

The gun was another story altogether....

Since I first discovered her work, it has been my pleasure to read every book that Suzanne Brockmann has written. I have many favorites by this wonderful writer, but I have to say that I have particularly enjoyed Identity: Unknown. As an extremely jaded romance reader who has been reading love stories 35 years and romance since its inception in the early 70s, in my opinion, this book totally fulfills the highest purpose of romance, to make the reader feel, and feel intensely. The emotional and passionate impact of this story is tremendous! I believe there are multiple reasons for this achievement.

First, characterization. Since romance, more than any other form of fiction, is utterly character driven, the most essential requirement for excellence is wonderful characters. Ms. Brockmann has totally succeeded at this goal in Identity: Unknown. These characters are not just sympathetic, they leap from the page.

Second, conflict and motivation. This book is brimming with believably motivated and very gripping external, internal, and most important of all, relationship conflict between the lovers. It is essential in a romance that the lovers be together constantly, be absolutely "made for each other," and yet something compelling and believable keep them apart, elements which are there "in spades" in this book.

An additional vital component of excellent fiction, including romance, is great plotting. It is very evident in this book in Ms. Brockmann's fascinating use of a continuing Navy SEAL theme. When Mitch, the hero, receives an injury while on undercover assignment that leads to temporary amnesia, this fascinating plotting device works beautifully with a well-motivated internal conflict centering around the honor and integrity of the hero. This in turn seamlessly leads to the exciting external and internal complications which race the story along and keep the reader rapidly turning pages.

Along with all of the above vital components of good popular fiction, in a romance, there is the additional requirement of a love relationship of such an intensity that the reader is moved to tears, quivers and sighs. In this, Ms. Brockmann thrillingly exceeds our expectations. The tenderness, poignancy, trust, compassion, caring--and blazing sensuality--between Mitch and Becca are astounding.

Mitch is one of my all-time favorite heroes, and, which is all-important for me as a reader, the heroine is worthy of him in her ability to love, her bravery, initiative, independence, and ethics.

Do yourself a favor and read this book, one of the best the romance genre has to offer! And after you do, pass it on to all your friends and relations who have ever scoffed at romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping and satisfying, July 24, 2005

Other reviewers have explained the plot pretty well, so I'll skip the details and just say that Suz's plotting is as detailed, consistent and believable as always.

Derailed from his mission by amnesia, Mitch's worst fears are that he is a criminal and might hurt Becca. (Yes, you would think that he might get a clue about his own character from observing what he is most afraid of!) Becca is strong and honest, a great match for Mitch, yet in all their combined toughness they are both very sensitive and vulnerable characters.

With all the physical and emotional pain that Mitch suffers, the book could be rather dark, but his determination and motivation keep pushing toward the light. And we are treated to some wonderful Keystone Cops moments from SEALs Lucky, Bobby and Wes, as they try to find Mitch and figure out what has gone wrong.

I've read all 11 of Suzanne Brockmann's Team 10 books at least three times each, and this remains one of my three all-time favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mitch - vow!, June 11, 2000
By

This is an amnesia story where the reader knows all the time who the hero is (good). In this book Mitch has to fight with his own demons and nightmares and trust a woman at same time. It has lines to other TDD- books. Lucky is one of the main side characters, because Mrs. Brockmann was clearly writing his story (get Lucky) in her mind allready. I liked the swimming parts and horseriding. It shows that SEALs learn to adapt under the situation if has to. As a person this Mission Man was my kind of a hero. The cover was excellent and the guy inside had his rough moments but he made it clear and chose the woman he loved. This book was like an old western where a lonely rider finally finds his goal and stays behind. As of these Star Wars lines (yes, Obi-Wan) when the other guys were wondering if Mitch has gone to the Dark side of the Force... I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Unknown SEAL, May 10, 2000
By
US Navy Seal Mitchell Shaw can't remember anything, but a couple of clues lead him to work in a ranch for Becca Keyes.

As Mitch works to unravel the mystery of his identity, he begins to fall in love with Becca, and the feeling is mutual.

Not the very best SEAL book, but I liked it a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ADDITION TO THE TD&D SERIES, May 14, 2011
By
Buggy "SUNNIE Day reader" (British Columbia, Canada) - See all my reviews
Oh this was just so good, another fantastic addition (#8 if you`re counting) to the Tall Dark & Dangerous series. Each book just seems to get better and better and I found myself constantly smiling through this one as Suzanne Brockmann tackles amnesia, giving Mitchell Shaw's story a real Bourne Identity flavour with a romantic edge.

There were a lot of things to like about Identity:Unknown, apart from the obvious hunky Navy Seal hero that is. The story itself is really good and there are all these wonderful side moments too; including some hilarious banter between the SEAL team members sent to find Mitch. We also get several welcome updates and cameos from past characters and spend time on a dude ranch, which was a fun departure. As usual Brockman creates absolutely sigh-worthy romantic dialogue and sizzling love scenes but here also manages to maintain an element of suspense. As we pick up the pieces of Mitch's memory and learn everything right along with him; what he's doing in New Mexico, who shot him and why and ultimately who he is. Its all cleverly done.

I think one of my favourite moments though (other then the Star Wars-Mitch has gone to the Dark side line) would have to be the discovery of a priests collar among Mitch's belongings. He and Becca have just spent several nights of passion together and now Becca feels terrible because she seduced him, subsequently breaking his vows. Throughout Mitch keeps proclaiming; I just know I'm not a priest, hilarious and uncomfortable to say the least. Speaking of Becca she was great heroine; funny, tough and goes after what she wants which makes her the perfect match for our absent minded hero.

Mitchell Shaw joins us from a church homeless shelter, he's dirty, bloody, in pain and apparently hung-over but worst of all when he looks in the mirror "Mish" has absolutely no idea who the man looking back at him is. The items in his possession are of little help; an address, a gun and five thousand dollars in cash. The address leads him to the lazy 8 Ranch where manager Becca Keyes just assumes he's her hired hand Casey Parker and Mish of course doesn't know any better, maybe he is? Sparks fly immediately between our pair even though its obvious Mish is useless on a horse, he is however awesome at rescuing small children caught in flash floods and knows a lot about guns.

Mish tries to keep his distance from Becca because after the dreams he's been having he's pretty sure he's a very, very bad man however Becca is determined to seduce him. Eventually our couple end up getting all down and dirty at the local motel while trying to figure out how to get into locker 101 at the bus station without tipping off the 3 men Mitch has spotted staking it out. He's pretty sure they're the bad guys; they are of course Lucky, Bobby and Wes who've been following his trail of marked cash and need to bring him in before the real Casey Parker gets him, unless he's gone to the Dark side that is... Cheers people

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't put them down..., January 8, 2010
I love Suzanne's writing style and here she surprised me. I expected similiar stories to the first few of the TDD series (prince joe, forever blue, etc.). Nope...new twist. Mitch came out of his shell and Becca I fell in love with. True to her normal style of writing...Suzanne made me laugh, I got all teary and those soft love scenes were great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark hero, sizzling attraction, witty dialogue ....., December 8, 2007
Identity: Unknown by Suzanne Brockmann
Silhouette Intimate Moments # 974 - January 2000

Mitch aka the Priest, wakes up with a splitting headache in a homeless shelter in New Mexico. He doesn't know how he got there, and he doesn't know who he is. He discovers $5,000 in cash, a .22 and a fax with an address on it, stashed inside his boot. None of that makes sense. Becca's dream is to someday own her own ranch, but for now she has to be content trying to manage Lazy 8. When Mitch shows up and hands her the fax with the ranch address and her name on it as way of introducing himself, Becca calls him Casey Parker and says she's pleased he's early because the ranch is short handed. Now Mitch has a job, and a name, but neither are familiar. At night he's having nightmares, and he's convinced he's a criminal and has done some horrendous things. Becca doesn't know what to make of her new ranch hand who doesn't seem to know anything about ranching. The attraction between them is sizzling. Mitch confesses his amnesia with Becca and together they try to piece together what he does know and what he's been dreaming about.

It was fun getting inside Mitch's head as he tried to sort through who he is and what his past has been. There's some very witty dialogue. Becca is wonderful at lightening Mitch's darkening moods. They make a great couple
