Book Description

February 22, 1990 0415902665 978-0415902663 2
With the current conservative emphasis on cultural literacy and on a return to a common culture, Ideology and Curriculum - with its stress on the dangers of ideological indoctrination in schools and on the power relations involved in what is taught - serves as a reminder that our educational policies and practices are never neutral. This revised paperback edition contains a new preface in which the author extends the book's arguments and places them in the current conservative context in education in society at large. A path-breaking statement of the relationship between cultural and economic power in education, Mike Apple's book has had a profound impact on the international debate about education and democracy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

". . . important, and ought to be attended to by thoughtful educators." -- The Educational Forum

"Ideology and Curriculum is an important and provocative book . . . His point is that what educators do is inherently political, representing acts of influence and power based on nature, knowledge, values, and society." -- Henry Giroux, Journal of Education

"[Ideology and Curriculum] should be included as required reading for all who are legally charged with the repsonsibility of establishing the public school curriculum, especially state legislators and school board members. Moreover, the book embodies valuable insights for all who are engaged in educational research." -- Journal of Educational Thought - 12/91

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!, February 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is an excellent text to help any reader especially those working in Academia better understand the historical (and current)underlining (and often troubling) purpose of United States education. It's an easy to read, straight-forward text that highlights the "hidden curriculum" our students are receiving and how we as critically-concious, socially just educational advocates can better equip ourselves for the work ahead of us.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great book marred by errors, February 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While the book itself is an essential read for any individual entering into the field of education, this version is by far inferior to the standard paperback copy of the text. It is marred by numerous typographical errors. Most commonly the letter 'c' has a tendency to show up in the middle of words throughout the book. On almost any given page I can usually find at least two to three instances of this error. The book itself is wonderful, informative and straightforward, but if you're looking to buy a copy of the book, buy the paperback.
