Outstanding sean-nos meets strings, December 16, 2004
This review is from: Idir Dha Chomhairle - In Two Minds (Audio CD)
This album astonishes me, and I'm not easily moved by emotion. Neil Martin's cello and Patricia Harrison's cor anglais accompany Aine on track 3, which lingers for ten unforgettably beautiful minutes with its elegant arrangement. Familiar tunes like She Moved through the Fair shine in an altered version as track 10; Peace in Erin provides an intelligent plea from the vantage of centuries past; The Auld Grey Man offers a neat morality play in its storyline, sung with nimble vehemence by Aine. The musical background is sparse or not present in some songs, affording a listen to the sean-nos solo style. Mel Mercier on bodhran, Liam O'Flynn on uileann pipes, Steve Cooney on guitar, Niall Vallely on concertina appear on a couple of tracks, to show the quality of musicians selected! Her voice is earthier and less high-pitched than some other women in this genre, and I found it more gripping for its engagement through a wider range of feeling, less limited by any ethereal tone. The resulting, slightly less "pure" delivery evokes for me a more rewarding rapport between this listener and the singer.
She hails from Belfast but her mother was from the Ring (Waterford) Gaeltacht, where Aine now lives. The notes are bilingual Irish-English; all but tracks 2 and 10 are sung in Irish and the lyrics printed are mostly in Gaelic as a result.
Handsomely produced booklet, well-crafted attention to the feel of each song, and sensitive musical backdrops make for one of the best traditional Irish singers I have ever heard on record.
