Book Description

October 1, 1992
Blinding blizzards. Freezing wind. Paralyzing cold temperatures. The 1,100-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is a race across the nation's most forbidding, demanding, and dangerous territory. Competitors must be resourceful, rugged, and resilient. Often they must make life and death choices. These are the stories -- in their own words -- of men and women who challenge the elements. Many fans believe this is the best book written about the Iditarod.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book is terrific . . . I promise you, short of getting on a dog sled, traveling into the darkness and running the Iditarod yourself, this will be the next best thing to being there. --Mitch Albom, ESPN / Detroit Free Press

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read, November 23, 2008

Thanks for the quick delivery. The book arrived well within the time stated. The topics are for an older age group than I had thought, so I have enjoyed it - and put it away for the grandchildren to be more discerning.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Fast Facts and Quick Stories, March 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Iditarod Classics: Tales of the Trail Told by the Men & Women Who Race Across Alaska (Paperback)
This book is an easy read, with great fast facts and fun stories from the mushers. It's a really quick read, and doesn't let each musher go into great depth (they get 5-6 pages each), but it does give a broad range of viewpoints.

There is an update to this volume that picks up where this one leaves off, and most of the modern superstar mushers are in that volume: More Iditarod Classics: Tales of the Trail from the Men & Women Who Race Across Alaska
