5.0 out of 5 stars I simply never tire of it...., August 14, 2001
This review is from: Idlewild (Audio CD)
One of the few albums I heard playing in a record store and bought on the spot, knowing nothing of the group. That was, oh, ten years ago, and I return to it regularly. For simple pleasure and for consistant quality in lyric and melody, it is hard to find a more pleasent listen. I would name my favorite tracks, but it speaks to the album that any given track can be a favorite depending on mood. Beautiful, thoughtful, witty.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best cd they ever made, October 10, 2005

This is one of my top three cds, ever. And I own over 900.

I never tire of this music. It is the echo of my youth and the whisper of my future. "Then someone sat me down last night, and I heard Caruso sing" comes from one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever written, in my humble opinion. And if you don't agree, that's fine because this disc will still be the one for which I reach on those evenings when I'm not sure what mood I'm in but I do know that I need soothed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Favorite For Years, September 27, 2001
This review is from: Idlewild (Audio CD)
Granted, it's not macho music, but this album is one of the best for when you want unwind. My favorite EBTG song is "Twin Cities" on "Worldwide," but this is a better CD. The music may be quiet, but the lyrics are strong. It's pop music at it's best: it connects a large audience with a message or story or image.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for a girl to live her life to..., February 22, 2002

This review is from: Idlewild (Audio CD)
As each of the girls in our family leave home, I give them three things to take with them: 1-A small compass, so they can always find their way home. 2-A copy of R. Munsch's "Paper Bag Princess", so that they understand the Ronalds they will meet on their way to happy-ever-after, and 3-This album, because of the song "Apron Strings". Together, it is a survival manual that every woman should have.I like to tell my family and friends that there are actually only two types of music...good and bad, and I prefer good. I don't like to try and categorize music, because frankly the good stuff transcends labels. How do you define Cowboy Junkies? Or Ella Fitzgerald? And, thank goodness, Everything But the Girl? The songs on this album are complex but effortless, and ultimately, classic. A must for any music lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Idlewild - Everything But the Girl, August 15, 2006
This review is from: Idlewild (Audio CD)
I first heard this album when I was 16 growing up in London. We played it non stop at work in "Top Man" It was my fist encounter with the band. Tracey Thorn delivers the vocals with such emotion. This album is like a Time Machine. Play it and you just start remembering........

Idlewild is not only my favorite EBTG CD, but probably my favorite period. The richness of Tracy Thorn's vocals and the eloquence of the melodies are perfectly meshed in this rare beautiful album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss Out On This Excellent CD, June 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Idlewild (Audio CD)
Okay, I am biased. I adore Tracey and Ben, and have been a fan since "Frost and Fire" and "Each and Every One" from their first CD. I have them all and this is definitely one of the bests. Some of their best lyrics. I love "Lonesome for a Place I Know", "Blue Moon Rose", "Love Is Here Where I Live", and "...Caruso." EBTG are not exciting in the obvious way, but I find their work so moving. And musically they have grown so much. Can't wait for the new one hopefully this fall. If you are Jonatha Brooke & the Story and Beth Orton fans, you might find this a nice addition to your collection. (Ben mixes a couple songs on Beth's new CD). Check out their website at ebtg.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing, touching, meaningful -- this CD is incredible, July 5, 1998
This review is from: Idlewild (Audio CD)
EBTG is one of the most talent and moving bands of our times. Tracey Thorn's voice is unbeatable, and the lyrics and music on this CD is some of the best ever done by EBTG. The CD works for nearly every mood: if you're up, it can generate energy, and if you're relaxed it can smooth you out. One of my favorite CDs out of hundreds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best entire album of all time., August 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Idlewild (Audio CD)
This is by far EBTG's most intriguing, most thoughtful, and most inspiring album. There is a song in here for every emotion you can feel, and a song that you can somehow relate to any memory you can think. This is one of the very few albums ever made on which every single song is brilliant, in it's own way. Even if you don't like the sound, you can appreciate the thought behind it. Listen to it, and be taken on a journey.
