The Handsomest Man of the Movies,
This review is from: Idol, Rock Hudson: The True Story of an American Film Hero (Hardcover)
I am a lover of three romantic comedies, "Pillow Talk," "Lover Come Back," and "Send Me No Flowers." These comedies teamed Hollywood's best looking actor, Rock Hudson, and the effervescent and talented Doris Day.
I saw Hudson in several movies, his greatest role being Giant, a totally overrated picture and his deepest role being Seconds, a totally underrated picture. I decided to find out more about him. I already knew he was a homosexual in a time when such a thing was considered verbotem in Hollywood. I knew he died of Aids. This biography is a well crafted book that explores the actor's life, his disappointments (he was never considered a great actor), his loves, and the promiscuous way he lived his sex life. While the book does not dwell heavily on Hudson's love life it does inform us that Rock Hudson had probably hundreds of one-night stands, in addition to several long-lasting relationships. I enjoyed Rock Hudson in his movies and my wife, who is not a fan of movie stars, calls him "a hunk." That he was. The chapters dealing with his illness and death are devastating because Hudson when all is said and done seemed such a likeable individual.
