5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Overlooked, April 6, 2006
This review is from: If My Ancestors Could See Me Now (Audio CD)
This was a great album. I came across it after seeing the movie Skin Deep which featured Falling Out of Love. Great song and I decided to go locate the CD. Amazingly the whole thing was great. Just fantastic good music with each song high quality and enjoyable.

There are very few albums that I can listen to all the way through - I've always been a 'mix maker' from back in the cassette days to CDs and digital music now. I constantly scan the radio stations when I drive. Well, this is one of the very few albums that I can put in and listen to all the way through without any desire to skip around. High constant quality, nice arrangement - like I alluded to in the review title 'highly overlooked'. No idea how it happened but this disc is a treasure and I'll be buying it again as mine is almost too scratched to listen to now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another CD..., December 13, 2007

I have absolutely loved this album since it came out -- on cassette. I cannot believe it's been almost twenty years. I can remember exactly where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard "Not Just Another Girl". This and "Primitive Man" are musically and vocally innovative songs, and they are exhilarating. This album is a unique and shining light that's been hidden under a basket. Worth hunting for. I'm glad Ivan doesn't take after old Aaron vocally (No offense...).

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid pop album from the late '80s., September 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Ivan Neville's debut album features many elements common to albums made in the '80s--drum machines, big reverb/delay vocals, and several keyboard tracks--but they never overshadow the songwriting which is a hybrid of pop styles, very succinct, and with memorable melodies and big hooks. The quality of the songwriting is consistent and there are no mediocre songs on the album. A great, under appreciated '80s pop album worth owning.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great all around album, December 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As many I purchased this album only knowing the songs "Not just another girl", and "Falling out of love". I was struck how great the other songs are. Powerful, soulful, funky, etc. This CD has everything.

Wore the tape out over the years. Searching for the CD has been difficult, but I've found that every song on this CD is also on Ivan Neville's Thanks CD. And "Thanks" is a little more accessible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tour de Force, August 28, 2009

Not only is this album, in my opinion, Mr. Neville's best work, but one could classify it as one of the best, most significant musical works par excellence of the late 1980s, an exemplar of enthusiastic height and girth. The most intriguing aspect of this album is that it defies classification. I have been trying to do this for the last twenty years, and it still leaves me frustratingly stymied. It is a true classic and highly recommended: a must for anyone who plays the electronic keyboard--a textbook, you will find yourself replacing because of wear. If you have an essential list of "musical musts," and this is not included, seriously reconsider amending your list.
