'Night' No Sophomore Slump--At Least Not Creatively, April 1, 2002
Following up a hot debut is always a tough proposition, one that befell McCready when she issued her sophomore effort, and on the same day as Shania Twain's massive COME ON OVER. Well, needless to say, IF I DON'T STAY THE NIGHT sold about sixteen and a half million copies less than Twain's pop breakthrough, in this case one of those ugly betrayals in which sales figures fail to match the actual work's quality. Granted, McCready's first disc was a masterful debut, but IF I DON'T STAY THE NIGHT is every bit its'equal--and then some. It's too bad nobody seemed to stick around to notice-the three singles from the set were all pretty much met with a lukewarm reception, despite being as catchy as anything on country radio at the time. And the remainder of the album was stocked to the wall with first-rate material--the title track, 'For A Good Time Call', and 'Oh Romeo' were all single-worthy. On top of that, McCready manages to cover Linda Ronstadt's 'Long Long Time'--and in the process turns in her finest vocal performance to this day. It's unfortunate, because the poor reception from radio here only escalated with her third (and justifiably ignored)effort I'M NOT SO TOUGH. Nonetheless, I guess the artist, and we as listeners, can take comfort in the fact that she released two first-rate projects--and that's two more than most artists can muster in a lifetime.

5 stars, October 4, 2001
I got this CD four years ago when it came out. It was one of the first country CDs I bought actually. I bought it after hearing "You'll Never Know", the most beautiful song on the album written by acclaimed songwriter Kim Richey. Although the singles off this CD failed to win big at radio, that doesn't mean that the songs aren't great. I still play this CD after four years! It's an all time favorite. If you bought her first CD "Ten Thousand Angels", you'll love this one. You'll also love "I'm Not So Tough", her most current release. The songs on this CD display various emotions and Mindy uses her voice like an instrument. "What If I Do" is a Mindy song with attitude, that same attitude that made "Guys Do It All The Time" a number one hit. "Oh Romeo" is one of the best songs and it touches on the sensitive topic of teen suicide. "Long, Long Time" is sung with amazing emotion, it's probably one of Mindy's all time best performances. Mindy McCready is so underrated as an artist. She deserves so much more credit than she gets. Her voice is pure and clear. Her songs are heart-felt and emotional. Get this CD, you won't be disapointed. Mindy is responsible for turning me into a country music fan.

Mindy's Best, July 25, 2000
By A Customer
With her strong showoff debut, it comes as no surprise that Mindy released this jewel with a different emotion. You won't find a "Guys Do It All The Time," But you will find some power ballads. One of the best is "Long Long Time," which displays Mindy's vocal power better than any other song she has recorded. But if you are looking for one of the better written songs in a long long time, check out the title track "If I Don't Stay The Night." Another strong song is "You'll Never Know," Which is a survivor song. The only smudge would be the silly "Oh Romeo", otherwise you are looking at a strong classic you'll want to play over and over.
