5.0 out of 5 stars 'Night' No Sophomore Slump--At Least Not Creatively, April 1, 2002
By
Chris S. "cscotts" (atlanta, ga United States) - See all my reviews
Following up a hot debut is always a tough proposition, one that befell McCready when she issued her sophomore effort, and on the same day as Shania Twain's massive COME ON OVER. Well, needless to say, IF I DON'T STAY THE NIGHT sold about sixteen and a half million copies less than Twain's pop breakthrough, in this case one of those ugly betrayals in which sales figures fail to match the actual work's quality. Granted, McCready's first disc was a masterful debut, but IF I DON'T STAY THE NIGHT is every bit its'equal--and then some. It's too bad nobody seemed to stick around to notice-the three singles from the set were all pretty much met with a lukewarm reception, despite being as catchy as anything on country radio at the time. And the remainder of the album was stocked to the wall with first-rate material--the title track, 'For A Good Time Call', and 'Oh Romeo' were all single-worthy. On top of that, McCready manages to cover Linda Ronstadt's 'Long Long Time'--and in the process turns in her finest vocal performance to this day. It's unfortunate, because the poor reception from radio here only escalated with her third (and justifiably ignored)effort I'M NOT SO TOUGH. Nonetheless, I guess the artist, and we as listeners, can take comfort in the fact that she released two first-rate projects--and that's two more than most artists can muster in a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars, October 4, 2001

Maren Cuykendall (Coralville, IA United States) - See all my reviews
I got this CD four years ago when it came out. It was one of the first country CDs I bought actually. I bought it after hearing "You'll Never Know", the most beautiful song on the album written by acclaimed songwriter Kim Richey. Although the singles off this CD failed to win big at radio, that doesn't mean that the songs aren't great. I still play this CD after four years! It's an all time favorite. If you bought her first CD "Ten Thousand Angels", you'll love this one. You'll also love "I'm Not So Tough", her most current release. The songs on this CD display various emotions and Mindy uses her voice like an instrument. "What If I Do" is a Mindy song with attitude, that same attitude that made "Guys Do It All The Time" a number one hit. "Oh Romeo" is one of the best songs and it touches on the sensitive topic of teen suicide. "Long, Long Time" is sung with amazing emotion, it's probably one of Mindy's all time best performances. Mindy McCready is so underrated as an artist. She deserves so much more credit than she gets. Her voice is pure and clear. Her songs are heart-felt and emotional. Get this CD, you won't be disapointed. Mindy is responsible for turning me into a country music fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mindy's Best, July 25, 2000
By A Customer
With her strong showoff debut, it comes as no surprise that Mindy released this jewel with a different emotion. You won't find a "Guys Do It All The Time," But you will find some power ballads. One of the best is "Long Long Time," which displays Mindy's vocal power better than any other song she has recorded. But if you are looking for one of the better written songs in a long long time, check out the title track "If I Don't Stay The Night." Another strong song is "You'll Never Know," Which is a survivor song. The only smudge would be the silly "Oh Romeo", otherwise you are looking at a strong classic you'll want to play over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely beautiful music, December 14, 2011

I agree with the other reviewers of this CD, it is absolutely wonderful. McCready has a gorgeous, pure
voice and she has such fantastic control over the ways she uses it. It is so sad, that she hasn't been fully
appreciated, and that her life has been turned so upside-down.

Her music is perhaps the best "country" that I've ever heard, and I wish her the very best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Sophmore Set, July 9, 2007
This is an excellent country/rock album by Mindy. Her voice has a great sensual quality on a bunch of the tunes here. All the tunes are listenable, and the majority are winners. Here are the good ones:

What If I Do - great country/rock tune about decision whether or not to go all the way

This Is Me

Cross Against the Moon - kind of a haunting and poignant quality to this one. It's about a rural girl with dreams of Hollywood who packs up one day and leaves the farm to try and make it happen.

For a Good Time Call

Oh Romeo - surprisingly good and soulful slow tune

The Other Side of This Kiss - great beat

Only a Whisper - slow and sensual with a heavy beat. Kind of arousing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Sophmore Release, January 6, 2001
I remember the very day I got this album, it was the day it was released, November 11th 1997, I begged my parents to buy it for me. I wasn't dissapointed. This still remains one of my favorite country albums. Ten Thousand Angels was a good cd, but this outshined it by far.

The album however, was not well received because of some poor marketing strategies, and not enough support behind it. This could be why there were problems between Mindy and BNA to begin with. What If I Do was the lead single on the album, a song which reflects the confusion and aftermath of what happens if you give in to a man, or if you dont. The song didn't do too well, if I recall it only made it to #27 or so on the country charts. This Is Me is a great song that should of been a single. If I Don't Stay The Night would of been a nice single, with a classic looking video. Cross Against The Moon is a very nice ballad. For A Good Time Call is a nice song which is lots of fun, and Oh Romeo is a good song, although sometimes it lacks somewhat. The Other Side Of This Kiss was the third and final single from this album, a nice fun country song that will keep you singing along and dancing. You'll Never Know was the second single and proved to be the most successful single of the album, hitting the top 10, which was accompanied by a lovely video taped in Aspen Colorado. Fine Art of Holding A Woman is a beautiful ballad. Only A Whisper is probably my least favorite on here, but it can be a nice song sometimes. The album ends with a lovely rendition of Long Long Time, by Linda Ronstandt originally. This is one album worth checking out. The cd is also one of the first country cds to become and Enhanced CD, which means you can pop it into your computer and it will load a nice interactive section with stuff about mindy and her music. This is one album you must get!
