I enjoyed how flawed the leads were. I like that Sarah was damaged by events, and consequently rebounded in a very harsh way. I enjoyed the exploration and rediscovery of her character. I liked "not" liking her for a time. I enjoyed the troubled setup of Jackson, and his endearment to the family.
I was thoroughly pleased with how things spun out of control. I was surprised how mystery took a hard right turn at the end, with the reveal of the big bad (and her subsequent evil epilog).
I really appreciated the big love scene being not overly graphic. It put me in mind of one of my favorite scenes (The Library) from one of Ms. Nobles other novels, "Compromised". The brief cross over with the new E-Novellete "Dress of the Season" was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. As always, Ms. Noble's dedication to research adds a wonderful truthfulness to the setting that resonates well with the reader. I particularly enjoyed the way she portrayed post-Napoleonic naval life and times.
Above all, I simply enjoyed Ms. Noble's writing style. Her wit and cleverness shine through each page. Little stylistic tricks, like starting some chapters with a clever lead-in describing what happened, and the jumping back to go over the actual events, had me laughing every time.
"If I Fall" is a treasure of a story that you will tear through in a few sittings, and feel much better for it.
Given the fact that this book got such good reviews (which is remarkable really), I...er, purchased it. I even read the first chapter beforehand (didn't have time to read more than that), wanting to get a feel for the...er, author's style, but it was a mistake (a big mistake). Er, I give the author credit for her plot line. That's about it. Whoever her editor was...er, did a terrible job. Throughout the entire book, I could not get past her parenthetical comments and constant er, er, er. Jeez, are all the characters so doubtful? Can the hero of the story at least sound more sure of himself? Every single character had at least a couple of er moments per page (if not more). Besides that, I felt as though this author still has to develop her style (and has some ways to go) since at times it felt as though she was addressing a young audience. Example, when she wrote things like "Now why would he do that, one might ask?" This might not be a direct quote, but it sums it up. One might ask? That sounds like something out of a children's book. Er, a fairy tale.
Needless to say (though I am saying it anyways), I was disappointed with this book. The premise was great, the cover appealing, the reviews promising and the beginning drew me in. The editing was poorly executed. The character development everyone praised felt rushed and chopped.
If you can get past that, er, enjoy it (or not).
She is not one to rusticate, but she also refuses to allow her heart to be hurt again, Sarah changes herself into the Golden Lady. Everyone wants the Golden Lady to attend their gala as she becomes the season's sensation. Family friend Lieutenant Jackson Fletcher wants the real Sarah to return as he loves the genuine article; but fails at his mission. Desperate he turns himself into The Blue Raven, which leads him into investigating Sarah's latest suitor who he fears may be a killer.
If I Fall is an entertaining late Regency romance as The Blue Raven and The Golden Lady fall in love, but Jackson fears how Sarah will react when the truth is unmasked. The murder mystery adds tension to a lighthearted fun frolic.

Although the plot slips into standard gear in the last quarter of the book, the characters are very well drawn. I look forward to reading more Kate Noble books.Published 7 months ago by kmariec
