Book Description

October 1, 2011

Janet Gurtler's books have been called "just right for fans of Sarah Dessen and Jodi Picoult" (Booklist) and "reminiscent of Judy Blume" (RT Book Reviews). In this riveting contemporary YA read, she explores the consequences of keeping the ultimate secret.

One small mistake. One giant secret.

Jazz wasn't supposed to have seen her mother's boyfriend that night. Especially not making out with one of her friends! Worse yet, she goes to tell her mom and gets the ultimate bombshell: her mom's pregnant. Now, Jazz can never reveal what she's seen. No matter what.

The only one who seems to understand her is Jackson. Rumors are swirling that he's just out of reform school. But right now-with everything going on-Jazz isn't afraid to live on the edge a little...

Praise for Janet Gurtler:
"Gutler's writing unfurls with the exquisite grace of a flower." — Sarah Ockler, bestselling author of Fixing Delilah and Twenty Boy Summer

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Janet Gurtler has a way with words that works really well in contemporary YA, and I love her style... the writing, the plot, the characters, everything about it is good." - Paperback Treasures

"I LOVE WHEN THIS HAPPENS! When I have ZERO expectations about a book and it blows me away (because If I Tell certainly did!) it makes me so happy! ...It was a surprise delight that I think everyone should pick up..." - The Book Barbies

"I love the cover of this book, but can't hold a candle to the heartwarming story inside... beautifully written and the end fits the story perfectly. This is a great read for teen girls!" -

"Gurtler's writing is beautiful, vivid in description and voice and pulling readers in early. Smoothly weaving description throughout, the settings ease in without kicking the reader out of the book. With heavy emotion and clear motivations, Gurtler's talents shine." - A Good Addiction

"...a beautiful, gripping novel. [Gurtler] handles each issue sensitively. The writing is such a caliber that you are able to feel what Jaz is going through... The book has a very real feel to it." - Alaskan Book Cafe

"Gurtler handles complex issues of race, identity, friendship and fidelity with laugh-out-loud humor and engaging frankness...but once you're in you won't regret it..." - RT Book Reviews

"...had me hooked from the beginning...I loved her support system. I loved all of her friends. ...more than worth the read!" - i loves to read

"Gurtler unabashedly tackles several sensitive topics without sacrificing the story line and constructs a beautiful paradox by making the burden of carrying a secret the factor that enables Jaz to face her outcast fear. This novel also addresses the pressure students feel to fit in and encourages them to stay true to themselves. Sometimes we just need to hear that it's OK to be different." - Booklist

"...addressees issues such as alcoholism, postpartum depression, racial and sexual identity with honesty and frankness (given that there was a lot of talk about making gay characters straight in YA literature, I really appreciated it), which added more depth to the novel and characters... What I loved most about this novel, beside it's emotional charge and strong morale, was the tenderness in voice and compassion Janet wraps her characters in." - Willing to See Less

"This girl has got to be one of the strongest female characters written in the past few years... IF I TELL is a sweet journey of a girl who was never really given a chance." - The Readiacs

3.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't connect with main character November 3, 2011
Format:Paperback
I loved Janet Gurtler's debut, I'm Not Her, so I was really excited for If I Tell. (Also, I'm kind of in love with Sourcebooks Fire. Their covers and their whole design is gorgeous.) But even though everything about If I Tell is good, I couldn't really connect to Jaz, the main character, and that made it hard for me to get into the story.

The writing, like in I'm Not Her, is great. Janet Gurtler has a way with words that works really well in contemporary YA, and I love her style.

The plot is good too - much better, in my opinion, than the description makes it out to be. Honestly, the description sounds kind of soap-opera-y, but that's not the case at all. If I Tell is not only about Jaz not knowing whether or not to keep Simon and Lacey's secret or to tell her mother - there are loads of interesting storylines. There are so many issues addressed in this book - alocoholism, sexual abuse, homosexuality, racism, and many more I don't want to list in order not to spoil it for you. They're all addressed with great subtlety, which is something I always love.

The secondary characters are great. They're multi-dimensional, flawed and realistic. There's Lacey, Jaz's ex-best friend who deals with her issues by drinking and sleeping around; Ashley, a spunky lesbian swimmer who tries to get Jaz to see herself for who she really is (I really loved Ashley); Jackson, whose issues I don't want to talk about because I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but whom I also loved (he's adorably sweet to Jaz); Simon, who starts out seeming like an ass but whom I could kind of understand later on; and Jaz's mom, who's also an interesting character, but again, I don't want to spoil the book for you guys so I won't say anything more about her. All of the secondary characters have their own issues, making this a realistic and interesting set of characters.

The only character I had a problem with is Jaz. That's not to say she's a bad character - she's well-written and fully-developed. But I just couldn't connect with her. Yeah, she's had it rough, but I couldn't really connect with her issues with being biracial. I don't want to sound mean or ignorant or anything, but... Is it really that big a deal? I know there are places where people are less tolerant than where I live, but it can't be the only thing people notice about someone, in today's world, can it? Yes, having to deal with that for all her life must have been difficult for Jaz, but I got kind of annoyed by how she let that define her whole person, how she just assumed no one could like her because of her color. Her immaturity in general kind of annoyed me - I got upset reading about how she couldn't deal with her issues and lashed out at everyone else because of it.

Maybe giving this book 'only' three stars is unfair, since the only big problem I had with If I Tell is my lack of connection with the main character. (Honestly, though, I'm kind of sick of star ratings in general...) But not being able to connect with Jaz made me feel somewhat removed from the story throughout, which means I couldn't enjoy it as much as I would have liked to. Still, I recommend you give this book a try - the writing, the plot, the characters, everything about it is good. And connecting with a character is different for everyone. So, I do recommend If I Tell, but since I liked I'm Not Her better I'd recommend reading I'm Not Her first, if you haven't read anything by Janet Gurtler.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review from Blkosiner's Book Blog October 27, 2011
Format:Paperback
If I Tell is a mesmerizing read with character that make you care and be involved with them. Even though I've never been in a situation like Jaz's I felt for her, and agonized over the right choice to make, and the implications of telling or keeping a secret.
There was so much more to this book than I expected, issues of friendship, bullying, biracial identity, sexual identification, and different family dynamics.
Ms. Gurtler fleshed out wonderfully Jaz's fears and emotions--dealing with her mom's pregnancy, her mom's boyfriend's (who she'd previously had a good relationship with) betrayal, and a changing friendship. But I also loved how everything ended up working out. Not in some fairy tale manner, but in something that could be real. There are beautiful moments of overcoming and of healing.
The romance was kind of surprising and fun to read all at the same time. Jackson was truly mysterious, but I loved how he opened up Jaz.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Favorite YA Contemporary Author October 18, 2011
Format:Paperback
I can now declare that Janet Gurtler is one of my top five favorite YA contemporary writers of all time. Seriously, after reading her two books, I am totally in love with her writing. She pushes issues that teens deal with and need to be brought out in the open. Since I read a lot of Christian fiction, one thing that I have major problems with that market is that it tends to be very few POC (person of color) main characters in the story. While Christian YA does tend to feature more POCs, it's still nowhere where it should be. That's why I turn to general market YA. This book clearly takes the subject of race and all the issues that come with it, from a teenage girl's perspective.

There's so much to discuss in the book but racial issues are the biggest one. Jasmine is a biracial teen that grew up in a very white environment. Luckily for her, her grandparents that raised her loved her unconditionally. Her relationship with her mother is on shaky terms but she does try to keep a good friendship with her. I felt for Jaz a lot in this book. I know what it's like to stand out and be teased for your ethnicity, which is something you can't control. I totally understood how hard it was for her to accept who she was because she had been unplanned and eventually unwanted by her parents. It's sad at the way her biological father chose to treat her and while there may have been reasons for his choice, I found it unfair and a bit selfish. Either way, his actions clearly have affected Jaz and caused her to have this anger, bitterness and low self esteem about herself. Her relationship with her own mother doesn't help much. Her relationship with Simon, her mother's boyfriend, seemed to help her until she catches him doing something that almost destroys their relationship.

There were times when I did get a bit annoyed with her as well. I wasn't really a big fan of how she treated Jackson sometimes. There's a lot of teen angst with her. It's accurately done. I just wanted her to snap out of it. I really wished she had discussed with Simon her fears earlier but I understand why she couldn't. It just would have saved a lot of trouble. Then again, her waiting so long probably helped to understand things better.

In addition to all this, there's also some romance, a near rape situation, Jaz's lesbian friend and her own difficulties, mean girls, postpartum depression, coffee shops and guitar playing. There's something for everyone! Overall, I really loved this book. There were times when I honestly forgot that an adult wrote this book. I truly felt like I was in Jaz's world as if I was reading her diary or seeing things through her eyes. Gurtler handles her situation with class and authenticity. I really enjoy her writing style as it is engaging and thought provoking. If you are searching for more contemporary YA books, I highly recommend her books. The problem now is that I want more and will have to wait. This book is just tops. HIGHLY recommended.
