4.0 out of 5 stars A great book, but the writers are struggling for questions
Let me start off by saying that I would have given this book a 5 out of 5 if it weren't for the fact that the questions get a little repeditive. For example, you'll find questions along the lines of, "If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be?" Sometime after, you might run into, "If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be?" And then...

2.0 out of 5 stars A few gems among the repeats and risque
The concept is marvelous -- there are so many situations in life where some sparkling conversation starters would be most helpful. If... has some imaginative questions to get discussion flowing and I appreciate that. However, by the time I eliminate the endless variations on the same theme, the old, overused standbys (If you could have dinner with any one person in...

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book, but the writers are struggling for questions, April 14, 2003

This review is from: If... (Questions For The Game of Life) (Hardcover)
Let me start off by saying that I would have given this book a 5 out of 5 if it weren't for the fact that the questions get a little repeditive. For example, you'll find questions along the lines of, "If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be?" Sometime after, you might run into, "If you could meet anyone in history, who would it be?" And then just to throw you a curve, you might get asked, "If you could ask one question to anyone in history, who would it be and what would you ask?" You'll find yourself skipping questions since the answers are already known.
But now onto the good stuff. I should note that this book is only for those who are into deep conversations. If you'd rather turn on the TV and sit in silence with your friends over talking about deep and meaningful things, you won't like this book.
My first experience with this book was with one of my best friends at a three day music festival. In between acts she'd ask me a question or two, and more often than not it would lead into some convesation or story. I never thought a little book would help me learn so much about someone in such a simple manner.
Being a music fan, I often get to meet many different bands. Recently I've started buying and giving these books away to bands to help them stay entertained on the road. Besides using them for inspiration, it's a great way for people to learn more about each other.
All in all, I'd say give the book a shot. They're cheep, and if you don't like it, I'm sure you'll easily find someone to take it off your hands.

We love this book. My husband and I trade questions when we're driving in the car with the kids. The questions stretch our imaginations, and get us to talk about things other than kids, household and money! It's great, we love it. Highly recommend it.

I first heard of this book in an English class in High School. Our teacher would pull it out when we had a few minutes to spare. I bought the book short while later and it is the best coffee table book in the world. It is a great conversation piece. It is wonderful for entertaining. It not only provides thought provoking conversation, but is the perfect tool for getting to know your guests on a more intimate level.

The concept is marvelous -- there are so many situations in life where some sparkling conversation starters would be most helpful. If... has some imaginative questions to get discussion flowing and I appreciate that. However, by the time I eliminate the endless variations on the same theme, the old, overused standbys (If you could have dinner with any one person in history...) and the many sexual topics(including desired lovers, simultaneous lovers, same gender lovers, who you'd like to see naked and more), I'm left with only a few questions I will actually use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Conversation Starter, December 4, 2003

This review is from: If... (Questions For The Game of Life) (Hardcover)
This is such a fun book! It's especially great for group bonding--I have fond memories of spending a whole day by the lake with a group of fellow students and answering questions from this book. It's a great conversation starter and a good way to get to know people, especially people you hardly know. I recommend it for college students (it's great for meeting your new floor- or suite-mates), party hosts, team-building activity coordinators, and anyone else who needs an easy way to start discussions and get to know people.

What an interesting idea...."If" asks all those questions no one ever thinks to ask. Inspiring thoughtful answers and a few moments of contemplation. It starts out as a game and ends as a revealing guide to character. A great way to break the ice at parties and boring business dinners. I love to present this book over a bottle of wine with someone I love, you would be amazed at what you don't know about those closest to you...hours of innocent fun!

Many of the questions in this book are incredibly disturbing. Like the one about whose pet you would kill. Or what country you would nuke. Or what family member you would like to watch you have sex. Or who you would lock up in a room and torture. What the hell is wrong with these people?

5.0 out of 5 stars If....., March 9, 2006
This review is from: If... (Questions For The Game of Life) (Hardcover)
you like to answer lots of questions and get to know yourself this is the book for you. :0) I picked some of the questions my 3 year old would understand and asked her. She thought it was hysterical to tell me what kind of tree she would be or where she would be if she could go anywhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Coffee Table book, September 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: If... (Questions For The Game of Life) (Hardcover)
I had this book on my coffee table for months. People were always amused when they started thumbing through it. One night the guy I was dating picked it up and it sparked a great conversation that lasted until 3 in the morning.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book definatly gets you thinking., July 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: If... (Questions For The Game of Life) (Hardcover)
When I first came upon this book, I picked it up and read the title out loud, thinking to my self what is this? I opened the book and read the first question on that particular page I had opened it up on. I stood there, thinking for what was probably 2 minutes for an answer, and became so involved in the book I answered to myself the next 3 questions on the page. I decided to buy the book, thinking this would be a great small party game, for couples and for your own self enjoyment!! Definatly a great book to add to your collection.
