Editorial Reviews

Review

"No one has replaced the brilliance of The Far Side ... but Friedlander's skewed jokes evoke that landmark comic's better than any strip does today.... It's something of a surprise to find this new work so whimsical, sly and modest ... He creates little cracked worlds with a simple image and a few words."―The New York Times Book Review

"Judah has drawn a weird and funny book in the grand '70s tradition of B. Kliban! I think this book will probably fix the world."―Tina Fey

"Some people meditate. Some people masturbate. But if you don't have the time or patience for either of those, I recommend reading If the Raindrops United to calm down, have a little laugh, or a big think."―Susan Sarandon, Actor

"I've known Judah for many years and I still don't understand how his mind works, but it sure works. Seriously strange. Seriously funny. A National Treasure. Sadly, I need to get a restraining order against him."―Paul Giamatti, Actor

"Another hit from The World Champ tackling the signs and symbols you frequently question while dropping hot lava in your American Standard VorMax."―Eddie Huang, Restauranteur, Chef, Food Personality and Writer

"Judah thank you for writing a funny twisted book. It is such an easy read. Even dum dums like me can enjoy it!!! Buy this book."―Dave Attell, Comedian

"Judah's drawings are deceptively simple, yet they become more compelling with every page. His talent as an actor/writer/comedian is further conveyed in ANOTHER medium. He's a Quadruple Threat. He wears many hats. Literally."―Janeane Garofalo, Actor and Comedian

"Reading Judah Friedlander's new book is a lot like hanging out with Judah himself: occasionally baffling, frequently thought-provoking, but, most of all, consistently hilarious!"―Mick Foley, Semi-Retired Wrestler, Author, Comedian and Actor

"To compare Judah Friedlander to a great cartoonist like Jim Davis would be a compliment to Jim Davis."―Wyatt Cenac, Comedian, Actor, and Writer

"An exercise in brilliant efficiency. One of the funniest and most insightful books ever drawn."―J.J. Abrams, Director, Producer, and Writer

"Visual jokes that make you think.... Where [Friedlander's] stand-up sets jab at things like gentrification, sexism, and gun control, If the Raindrops United punches those same issues right in the gut."―Refinery29

"Judah Friedlander is pretty amazing. Not only is he a brilliant comedian, karate world champion, and accomplished actor, but he's a very thoughtful guy. When he's not busy making people happy on stage and on screen, he's often putting some serious consideration into the woes of those around him. And luckily for us, all that humor and all that thoughtfulness is on display in his latest book If the Raindrops United."―The Interrobang

"The book's drawings run the gamut between The Far Side and The New Yorker, offering plenty of belly laughs."―Bedford + Bowery

Warning, this is a very weird book- that will either make you go "huh?" or laugh yourself sick. Or perhaps both. Judah Friedlander is a comedy writer, but perhaps best known as TV writer Frank Rossitano on 30 Rock. He also wrote the satirical karate book "How To Beat Up Anybody." (I found that book rather more funny than this).

The cartoons are reminiscent of the Far Side, so for those looking for more Gary Larson-type strangeness will likely enjoy this. For example, one page shows two buildings, one with a sign “Yoga” and the other “50 Dollar Cupcakes,” with the caption “Where to Meet Women in Manhattan". (New York is one of the most used subjects).

“Goth Crayon Box" was hilarious.

There's also a mini- story: “Gentrification Man,” a “superhero for the rich and overprivileged who “stands up for the rights of corporations.”

Note that although Judah can be very funny, his art is there more to entertain than look nice.

I adore this book! It's a great present for that brainy/funny person in your life. I have it as a coffe table book and my friend always love it. The cartoons are thoughtful and even a little dark at times, but I enjoy the dose of reality with my humor; while its brainy, it's also super approachable, filled with social and historical commentary about stuff we all know about, nothing "cult" or "exclusively academic" about the subject matter.

This book is adorable, frightening, insightful and guaranteed to make you think. I was not able to read it very well on the treadmill, so would suggest curling up with this one. An excellent winter read and a great gift for any fan of Judah and/or 30 Rock~! The humor is in the same vein. Someone needs a smile and this book will deliver it.

I bought this on a whim and glad I did. Mr. Friedlander's drawings made me laugh out loud, chuckle, go "huh?" and some I could not decipher. A brilliant mind at work. I recommend this book.

When you're the World Champion of the World sometimes words can't describe what's going on in your head. In that case just draw it. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, well these drawings somehow are worth twice that.

When you need a break from life just pick up this book and flip through a few pages. On the day that I received it I found that I was already half way through when I told myself that I needed to take a break and save some for another day. It's not a book that I see myself reading more than once but is a good conversation piece for visitors. (some PG-13 content). Maybe I'll take advantage of the insert your own drawings pages in the back of the book.

After watching Judah Friedlander on the Daily Show, I decided that my beloved would really enjoy this book so I gave it to him as a Christmas present. He reads a few pages at a time and has been enjoying it on and off ever since. The cartoons speak truth in a strange, dark, and funny way.

There's not much you can say about a book of cartoons. They're either good, or they're bad. I suppose there IS a third option: they can be really, really great, like those in this collection.

Some are odd, some bizarre, some political, some social commentary, and every damn one wonderful. Not one person in my family isn't a fan, including my sister in Scotland whom I showed many of these to via Skype.

No wonder Judah is World Champion.

Bought as a gift for my Mormon brother in-law after seeing an interview with the author on The Daily Show, & without reading it myself. Bad idea. I thought it would be mostly social & political commentary cartoons like what they showed on the show. Perfect for my bro in-law's sense of humor.
After he opened it on Christmas I got a text that said "Ummm...thanks?" w/ pics of explicit drawings of male & female genitalia from the book. I hope he didn't open it in front of the kids. And of course now he's saying his sister in-law sent him nude pics. Lol. The book seems really funny from what I saw on tv & online, but if you're planning to gift it, just be aware the nude drawings are in there so you can be considerate of your recipient.
