Book Description

February 10, 2003
When a dying old man gives David an ornate blue box, he has no idea that his life is about to spin completely out of control in a hellish ordeal that he never would have dreamed possible. As he struggles with the forces that are destroying his life and his spirit, he has to come to terms with his own attitudes, perspectives, and selfishness. There’s far more than his life at stake, but the battle that he must fight within his own dreams seems to be impossible for someone who never has shown strength before. What would you do if every time you fell asleep, you went straight to hell?

More About the Author

In becoming a writer, I've meandered over a path that I never could have foreseen years ago when I was a young man hoping to become a novelist. Time and circumstance have conspired to push me more towards non-fiction, as I've created most of my writing over the last decade to support my website, livinglifefully.com, through articles for the weekly e-zine that I publish as well as daily meditations and other essays to support certain topics. While I still love to write novels, I love the writing that I'm doing, too, and I hope to continue it for quite a while.

I grew up in a military family, so my experience in life has to do with non-permanence. This trend has continued into my adult years, as I find that life sends circumstances my way that force me to choose between staying in a place where opportunities have dried up, or moving on and meeting new people and challenges. Currently my wife and I live in eastern Washington, where I teach high school.

After I received my B.A. in Spanish many years ago, I moved to Europe, where I lived for three years--in Salamanca, Munich, and Barcelona. After coming home and getting my first Master's degree, I joined the Army and ended up spending two more years in Augsburg, Germany. The years that I spent in Europe have been among the most important in the formation of my world and life views.

After many years of teaching college, I made the switch five years ago to teaching high school, mostly because there seemed to be more of a need for high school teachers than for college teachers. The change has been very valuable for me, as I've met some of the most important people in my life in my students and colleagues; while the work is harder and the vacations much shorter, I have no regrets at all about making the change.

I have a doctorate in Teaching and Learning, as I've been interested in both all my life. I also have three M.A.'s: in Educational Leadership, English as a Second Language, and English Lit. I try my best to bring what I've learned about learning to my writing, so that a reader can benefit from my experience of life as well as from my writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Interesting Read, February 27, 2003
This review is from: (If I Should Die) Before I Wake (Paperback)
In (IF I SHOULD DIE) BEFORE I WAKE, author Tom Walsh gives us a philosophical novel that is unrelenting in its action-packed pace, yet remains a book that makes you think-about yourself and the human condition. His often confused, bewildered protagonist, David, learns to face and overcome the fears that are crushing his spirit, fears common to all of us. This is a very interesting read, and I highly recommend it.

-- John McLain, author of THE RECKONING (also on Amazon)

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrifying in its closeness to reality, July 28, 2003
This review is from: (If I Should Die) Before I Wake (Paperback)
I'm glad this one came across my desk--it's a gripping ride of terror that's unrelenting in its pace, but also extremely relevant and perceptive. David, the protagonist, is just like many people I know--feeling lonely and isolated in a world that's becoming less and less connected. His feelings of disenfranchisement lead him to do something that he never would have done otherwise, and the price he pays is terrifying--especially when I think that he could be any of us. The psychology here is sound, also, as the results of being an adult child of an alcoholic and having grown up with an LD are very strongly and accurately shown in David's case. I'd highly recommend this work to anyone who feels somewhat adrift in an anonymous society--or even if you know someone like that. David's redemption is hard-fought, which makes it all the more satisfying.
