5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful romance
This story may seem shallow to those who have been on a hardcore read of murder mysteries for a year; but, for those of us who just need a break from the violence, this is perfect. Believe me, I'm a hardcore reader. Romance isn't my style - normally. However, If There Be Dragons made me feel something I haven't felt in a long time. I had time to slow down and look at the...

Let me first say that I love Kay Hooper books, I own most of them. So even though I wasn't sure about this one, I bought it anyways because of the author. As the first reviewer said, it had hardly any plot, and you kept waiting for another twist, kept waiting for it to get better & it didn't. Let me first say that I love Kay Hooper books, I own most of them. So even though I wasn't sure about this one, I bought it anyways because of the author. As the first reviewer said, it had hardly any plot, and you kept waiting for another twist, kept waiting for it to get better & it didn't. Although the wolf wasn't elemental to the plot, he & the male character were the highlights of the book; the damsel in distress was just too predictable. It read very much like a junior high novel. Maybe that's the group she was trying to market to with this one?? If you're used to the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series, don't bother with this one, you'll be bored! If you're looking for a predictable, easy read, or buying for a pre-teen/teenager, it's probably a good choice.
I give all her other books 4-5 stars; if it was an option I would have given this one 2-1/2, so I rounded up to a 3. :)

2.0 out of 5 stars A Reissue..., November 3, 2008
Brooke Kennedy has isolated herself in the wilds of Montana but she won't tell her friends why she needs this solitude. Cody Nash is asked by his friends to go up to Montana and find out what Brooke is hiding and to protect her if necessary. Cody is psychic but he doesn't need his powers to know that Brooke is terrified and has only seemed to increase. When a blizzard snows them in and strands them together, Cody realizes this is a chance for him to not only get to know Brooke, but perhaps save her from herself.

Readers should remember this is a re-issue of an old story. There is formula here people and if a formula book is off putting you may want to look for one of Ms. Hooper's other efforts. This for the most part is a tepid effort and not the best example of what this talented author is capable of producing. The character development is not terribly brilliant and this may also leave the reader feeling a little flat.

3.0 out of 5 stars C+ <SNORE>, September 2, 2008

This book follows a very old formula. Girl with personal issues meets knight in shining armor willing to look past her issues and works through them.

The paranormal part? She's psychic. She becomes a hermit because she's been hurt too many times by her mother and other people. The big paranormal twist that you keep reading on for apparently happens in the first 1/4 of the book. And the rest of it is rather trite.

The dream analogies of this book are suited for a middle-school romance. It reminds me of bad diary entries from junior high. "Oh, he saw right through to my soul with his golden eyes." She has a dragon in her dreams and a black pit/abyss that is representational of him and what the potential future may hold. Blah-blah-blah. Vomit. She only wants to be with him if he can't die. This whole martyr thing isn't even pulled off well.

And the thing with the wolf, really? I mean, REALLY? The non-human thing she's been fearing has a been a wolf that was hurt? PUT ME out of my misery. I kept reading the book to see if there was more to the paranormal-ness or some other plot twist, but that was it! It was about 20 pages of some unhuman thing that exuded pain and she's completely freaked out by it. I'm expecting some sort of dead relative and it's a wolf. Other than reading a few thoughts from the alpha male in the storyline, the psychic stuff is pretty irrelevant unless it's related to the wolf. And the wolf--- OMG, isn't even a great plot device. The book didn't need it at all, but I guess the author needed to add a few pages to this one.

It has a plot and no typographical errors, but I wouldn't go around recommending this book. It's as boring as a Nora Roberts novel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Suspense/Paranormal Romance, February 26, 2009
Never do I remember reading a book without sub-plots. If Kay Hooper's IF THERE BE DRAGONS has a sub-plot, it was too subtle for me. This story centers around Brooke Kennedy who runs a guest lodge alone in the Montana wilderness. Her best friend, Pepper, is concerned about her and sends Cody Nash to check up on her. He believed Pepper's friend was in trouble. Instead of finding a damsel in distress, he finds a hostile, mistrusting woman. When a dangerous storm strands him there, he discovers the secret of why this beautiful woman has shut herself off from the world and vows to slay her dragons.

Throughout the book, I waited for there to be more. Maybe some real danger. Surely someone was after Brooke. The only thing chasing her was her own demons or in this case, dragons. This book was originally published in 1984 and maybe back then, this would have been a full-bodied story. Sadly, I found it lacking. I haven't read any other Kay Hooper books and would highly recommend going with a more current book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Truly Awful, November 28, 2008
This was one of the worst books I have ever read. Although I generally enjoy Hooper's novels, this one was so horrible I'd give it 0 stars if that was an option. No plot, no character development, no drama, no romance, no action. It's as if Hooper just took deleted lines from other books and threw them all together. She, her publisher and her editors should be ashamed of putting this drivel on the market. The trees used to create the paper this book was printed on died in vain.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, November 27, 2008
As a Bishop fan, this book was very boring and without any twists. The characters had little depth and their "love confessions" were silly and childish.

Believe me, I'm a hardcore reader. Romance isn't my style - normally. However, If There Be Dragons made me feel something I haven't felt in a long time. I had time to slow down and look at the selflessness and patience of one to heal another. It's a very nice story and it warmed my heart. I may read one or two more stories like this and then its back to the hardcore stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars if there be dragons, October 8, 2008
I enjoyed this light romance with a touch of the physic thrown in. Good entertainment, you don't have to think about it or look for deeper meanings in it. I have enjoyed all the Kay Hooper books I've read and am looking forward to reading more of her stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing much here, November 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Since there wasn't much to the book, there won't be much to this review. This was not a story, and as a KH fan, I was tremendously disappointed. Very weak, and the wolf behavior was ridiculous. I began skipping entire paragraphs thinking that something would happen, but it didn't. Do not bother with this unless you are under 14 years old.

This is my first Kay Hooper book... first off it's short..but in this case..that was fine. This book has no plot. I actually did read the whole thing even though it was painfully boring hoping to get to the point but it never came. I read constantly...several books a week, but this was a waste of time. Now, with that said, I will look for a another of her books..she is a skilled writer, just this one particular book is a flop. I am hoping the next book I come across of hers is better.
