Stunning work,

Deep and powerful work from a stellar musician. CD seems to be nowhere to be found (I found the tracks online). What a shame that If This is Hell isn't getting the accolades it deserves. Vastly more original and compelling than most popular music of the day.

The best ever by Dax,

The first time I saw Deadboy and the elephantmen was Nov. 2, 2000 Deadboy and the elephantmen played a practice demo show at Renaissance in Lafayette, LA.
The songs were very hypnotizing. I just had to get up closer to see, so I went to the front of the stage. It was packed with fans. It seemed like all eyes were glued to Daks. Everyone in the band had long hair hanging down and they moved hauntingly slow into the groove. I felt like I was in the twilight zone. They only had 6 songs to play. So hearing them for the first time live as dead boy and the elephant men was an eternity of newfound music for me. I will never forget it. After the show I wanted to talk to Daks, but I froze up. I was lost for words. I was in limbo for days. I couldn't understand how he could put the words with the melody. It's all I could think about. It's truly a gift to be at his level of talent. So after that night, every time I told people about the group, I found that if they already new about them, I gained a new best friend. Everyone who knows Daks always has something good to say about him. Buy the CD it has value. If you find yourself getting hooked on the music its ok, but you were warned.

Very different from his music with Acid Bath but still good . just as dark and evil. This is not a metal album if that is what you are expecting you might be disapointed. Its a little like Agents of oblivion ,but i like Deadboy better. I found a copy on Ebay for 12$

Dax Riggs' best effort since Acid Bath.,

Regardless of being a big fan of Dax Riggs prior to hearing this album, I was simply blown away by everything it possesses. I used to think that Agents of Oblivion would be Dax' best effort beyond his Acid Bath days, but I'm happy to say that's not the case. Even as great as Agents were, this original Deadboy lineup's work grew on me instantly. Dax, one of my top few favorite vocalists, has an unbelievable voice that expresses such eye-opening emotion without having to whine about anything at all. Regardless of your music tastes, you should at very least be able to appreciate his unreal talent. I just can't give this album enough credit and that says a lot because I mainly listen to metal. Make the right choice and buy this album. Rotten Records has reissued it and it's available through Rottenrecords.com and ebay, so there is hope for those of you that don't want to spend $80 for an original copy like somebody I know did.

After the dissolving of the once mighty Acid Bath (RIP Audie) and the short lived but great Agents Of Oblivion, Dax was on his way to music genius once again. This album represents what Deadboy was capable of with talented musicians and creative ideas. Sadly Dax disbanded this formation and got some new fellows to play in his second version of Deadboy.
Most people are not aware of this due to the fact they did not release anything with this second lineup and only played around southern Louisiana and a few surrounding states if my memory is correct. This version had Dax on vox and guitar (of course), a dude named Lucas on guitar and backing vox, another dude named Shane on guitar, and as for the bassist and drummer I forgot their names but they fit the groove of the band perfectly. Instead of following through with this lineup which sounded amazing live Dax decided to toss them all out and bring an untalented hack job of a drummer (Tessie Brunet) for his next version of Deadboy. The band was only Dax and Tessie for most of this lineup but they eventually brought the bassist from Agents into the mix. That didn't help anything though. This was the worst and most uncreative period in Dax's musical history at least in my opinion. Deadboy at this time was nothing but cheezy three power chord songs, repetitive uninspired lyrics, and horrible drumming to accompany them, not to mention Tessie's bad backing vocals. I have painstakingly written all the above so I can relate to you the reader of this review the disgust I have of the last incantation of a once great lesser known band. This album is the only worthwhile release of Deadboy's existence and shows what they were once capable of. If you compare this to We Are Night Sky you too will notice how bland, uninspired, uncreative and musically lacking that album was and how far Deadboy fell before Dax dropped the name and decided to release things from now on under his name. Speaking of which Dax's new album is significantly better than the last death throws of Deadboy and is well worth checking out. |
