I absolutely loved If We Kiss. I was laughing out loud by page 3. Charlotte aka Charlie finally gets her first kiss from Kevin and gets caught by Mr. "Hair-Man". Embarrassed, Charlie decides not to tell anyone about this, not even her best friend Tess. However, things get sticky when Tess and Kevin become a couple. And even worse when her mom and Kevin's dad start dating. Now Charlie is lying to everyone, especially herself. She's afraid to reveal her true feelings for Kevin. But what happens when he seems to feel the same way about her?

I couldn't put the book down. Vail is a fantastic author who definitely knows how to capture teen angst. This was fun fast read that teens will love and some adults will too. If you like books like `The Princess Diaries' or `Who's Your Daddy', you'll love this book. I will definitely be reading more of Rachel Vail's books in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great novel from Rachel Vail!, January 29, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: If We Kiss (Hardcover)
Rachel Vail captures exactly what happens in the mind of the teenage girl. She takes a would-be casual situation and makes it intense, real, and emotionally overpowering. 'If We Kiss' brings alive the truly insane and unfair nature of young love, and how life always gets in the way. You won't be sorry - I couldn't help but read this book in one sitting: I smiled, chortled, cried, and nodded solemnly at every word. Try Rachel Vail's newest book today, no matter your age; older audiences can definitely relate to it, as can younger one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for girls in the teenage age group, December 9, 2005
This review is from: If We Kiss (Hardcover)
in the book If we Kiss a girl named CHarlotte has never before been kissed until one of the most popular boys who is also a big time "player" of girls gives her her first one. The next day she goes to a party of his and sees him and her BFF kissing. She becomes very angry at him until their parents start dating, and they are forced to hang out together. She develops another crush on him even though he is dating her BFF. They kiss once more, and now her challenge is cofessing this to her BFF.

Some positives about this book are that it gets your attention quickly, and it doesn't take long to read. The author keeps adding twists to make it more and more interesting. I think this book brings out a more feminine side in all readers.

Negatives about the book If We Kiss are that it can get confusing with all the drama. Everything is so mixed up in carlotte's life that sometimes certain things are hard to follow. I think that this would be a book only for girls to read, so i would not recomend it to guys. In that way, the book is a bit sexist

My overall review of the book is it is a great short read for mostly girls. It is one of those books you just can't seem to put down. If i had to rate the book i would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. It could definately be included on my top ten list for this school year.

5.0 out of 5 stars The woes of falling in love from a 9th grader's perspective, June 8, 2005
By
This review is from: If We Kiss (Hardcover)
Who doesn't dream about their first kiss? It will be romantic. It will be dreamy. It will be all that a girl ever wanted. Ninth-grader Charlotte (Charlie to her friends) has been thinking about her first kiss for years. But then one day, Charlie is taken out of her dream world when Kevin Lazarus grabs her hand and pulls her outside of the school.

"Kevin led me quickly around the side of the building, then stopped. I managed not to crash into him. I tried to look calm, cool, unperturbed. I told myself not to laugh, especially not a snorting kind of laugh. "Wha--what did--"

And then he kissed me.

There I was, pressed up against the brick wall, kissing Kevin. A decorative sticking-out brick was digging into my backbone, but I didn't want to wreck my first kiss by readjusting. I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to concentrate."

Charlie is taken aback by her kissing encounter, and then getting caught by the principal. (The decorative brick was right outside his window!) Instead of gossiping with her best friend Tess about Kevin, Charlie keeps it to herself, a decision that ends up coming back to haunt her. At a party soon after the Charlie-Kevin kiss, Kevin kisses Tess! And before she knows it, Tess and Kevin are dating and Charlie is caught up in a web of lies.

Despite everything, Charlie still finds herself thinking about Kevin. Why did he kiss her? Did he still like her? He's now off-limits because Tess is dating him. To make him even more off-limits, Charlie finds out that her own divorced mother is dating Kevin's father!

What is a girl to do when she's fallen for the one guy who she should stay away from?

Author Rachel Vail has written THE FRIENDSHIP RING, as well as WONDER, EVER AFTER, DO-OVER, and DARING TO BE ABIGAIL. IF WE KISS is a fun, humorous book about the woes of falling for the not-so-perfect boy. The main character Charlie is down-to-earth and endearing. She's reminiscent of a young Bridget Jones. She winds up in humorous situations and works hard to get out of them. It's also refreshing to read a YA book about a 9th grader who's dealing with situations that are somewhere in between a middle grade reader and a more serious YA novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book, June 2, 2005
This review is from: If We Kiss (Hardcover)
I loved IF WE KISS. It starts out just fun and funny, and so addictive I couldn't put it down. But as I kept reading I realized there was so much more to it -- it is all about love and how it changes everything. The narrator, Charlie, likes a boy she doesn't want to like. Kevin is not kind and sweet, for one. For two, he starts going out with Charlie's best friend, Tess, after he already kissed Charlie! And then, to make everything really crazy, his Dad is dating Charlie's mom. But she can't help it -- she likes him and she wants to be around him and she wants to kiss him again. There are secrets and little and then bigger betrayals, family and friend relationships all change... and through it all Charlie and Kevin and Tess and everybody else, even the minor characters in one or two scenes, feel so real I could swear I really know them. I care about them all and they are so funny but so full of worries and pain and love, too! I laughed and I cried and I just hope Rachel Vail will write a sequel because I need to know what happens next!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars too cute, October 11, 2006
This review is from: If We Kiss (Paperback)
Can I just say that I love everything by Rachel Vail? She has this way of telling a story that makes you feel like you're totally there, experiencing everything as intensely as her characters do.

The whole thing about chosing between a friend and a boy is classic. Most of us would be like, "Dude! I'd never hurt a friend for some random guy!" But when you're in it, nothing is that simple. When you're in it, you act in ways you never thought you would. And that's what I love about this book. Seeing how crazy passion can make you. And then finding out what loyalty, to yourself and to others, can make you do when you least expect it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book Review- If We Kiss, December 16, 2005
This review is from: If We Kiss (Hardcover)
Book Review for "If We Kiss"

Who doesn't dream about their first kiss? In If We Kiss, Charlie gets her first kiss by Kevin Lazarus who she really doesn't like all that much. After they kiss, she can't stop thinking about him and starts to like him. She makes a decision not to tell her anyone about her getting kissed. She later on has a party and comes downstairs to see her downstairs to see Tess making out with Kevin. Tess starts to like him and goes out with him. Then Charlie's mom and Kevin's dad start to date and then get engaged. The two families go on a skiing trip and Kevin kisses Charlie again.
Rachel Vail has done a good job on this book making it very interesting and it has really drawn me in to read it. I found it very interesting about her that she wanted to be an undercover person and it's weird to think of someone like that being a great author. I would recommend this book to people who like romances. To find out how Charlie got out of her big mess, read "If We Kiss."

2.0 out of 5 stars If We Kiss, April 27, 2010
This review is from: If We Kiss (Paperback)
If We Kiss is a book with no real substance. I guess there could have been a message to it but it didn't come across to me. It all just seemed a little too pointless.

If We Kiss is about Charlie's first kiss and what happens afterward. The whole kissing part wasn't even that big. The story was more about what happens if she kisses him again later even though she didn't enjoy it the first time. Oh and things have really changed since the first time she kissed him seeing as now her mom is dating his dad and her best friend is dating him.

I couldn't like Charlie. She was whiny, selfish, rude, and just plain mean at times. Her mom was actually happy dating Kevin's dad but she had to be a complete bitch because that is not what she wanted. Her best friend was dating Kevin but whenever she thought about Kevin, she didn't seem to mind that. There were times when she even wished he would dump her. What kind of friend does that?

Also, there just didn't seem to be anything to the story until the end when Charlie finally grew up a little. She was 14-years-old but she acted more like she was 11 or 12. The setting of the high school didn't seem like any high school today. It's almost like the characters could have been in middle school. That was probably closer to their attitudes.

Overall, I didn't like If We Kiss and I would only recommend it if you are desperate. I couldn't get into it and now I am just glad that I am done with it.
