Product Description

His #1 country album with the #1 hit title track plus the #1 hits Baby Blue and Famous Last Words of a Fool !

Amazon.com

While not one of his biggest sellers, this 1988 album is a fine representation of George Strait's new-traditionalist sound, which opened the door for the wave of "hat-acts" that took over country music in the early '90s. Tommy Collins's title track is a piece of vintage Bakersfield honky-tonk, while "Under These Conditions" and "Famous Last Words of a Fool" are barstool lamentations worthy of George Jones. Fiddler Johnny Gimble and pianist Floyd Domino lend an authentic Texas dance-hall kick to the Nashville rhythm section. --Rick Mitchell

I cannot believe how negative some people are about this CD. The title track is one of George's best songs (Pay close attention to the lyrics), "Baby Blue", "Famous Last Words Of A Fool", and "Bigger Man Than Me" are country classics. "Lets Get Down To It" Is one of his most underrated songs (Perhaps only behind "Angel, Angelina" and "You Got That Ole Redneck Feelin Blue"). Is it as good as "Pure Country", "Something Special", and Beyond The Blue Neon"? No it isn't, but it is a quality CD, that should be a must for George fans.

This is real country and such a treat to listen to. I can't believe that George is retiring, what a shame, but his songs will be around forever. He has so many great tunes and this is just a few, love the Cd, can recommend it to anyone who was a fan and is still a fan of George's. What a great voice, a couple of really great tunes on this CD , they are all good but a few hit home for me.

I've always felt that IF YOU AIN'T LOVIN', YOU AIN'T LIVIN' should have been released between #7 and OCEAN FRONT PROPERTY, rather than between OFP and BEYOND THE BLUE NEON. What characterized #7 is not so much the lyrics or even overall melody of its songs, so much as its instrumentation and arrangements. That's really the case here, too. I rarely find myself in the mood to revisit this album, and whenever I do, I find myself zoning out and just sort of getting lost in the fiddle, steel, and piano more than the lyrics or even Strait's vocals. When the vocalist interrupting your instrumental album is George Strait, you've done *something* right.

The catchy title track was penned by Tommy Collins and originally a #1 hit for Faron Young in 1954. Collins was befriended by Strait's influence, Merle Haggard (Hag's song "Leonard" is a tribute to Collins). It's not an overt thesis declaration, but upon consideration I've finally come to see that that song became the title track and opening cut because this album is all about the musicianship, starting in the Bakersfield sound, but quickly expanding to Western Swing on the very next cut ("Under These Conditions") and nearly a full-blown Sinatra-esque lounge jazz by the ending "Back to Bein' Me".

Rumor has circulated all these years that "Baby Blue" was selected by Strait as a subtle tribute to his daughter, whom he lost in a car accident. I don't know if it's true, but that recording has felt a lot more poignant and sadder to me ever since I first read that speculation. Regardless of the veracity of that rumor, the recording remains one of the most time-stopping in Strait's entire discography.

This album was the last one from George before the hat act invasion of 1989 took place (Garth, Alan, Clint) and gets by mainly on its singles. The unreleased tracks are not as impressive as George's usually are.
The title track, a classic by Faron Young, is given a great cover and is updated to the eighties' "new traditionalist" sound. Baby Blue has since taken its place as one of his fans' favorite lost love ballads. George sounds as if he's on the verge of tears and is barely holding it together. Famous Last Words carries the same theme, but uses a fresh point-of-view.
Among the unreleased songs, Under These Conditions is the best, a sweeping honky tonk ballad which boasts a lot of heart. Bigger Man and Back to Bein' are also very well done. The album, however, does have three below average songs: Don't Mind, Is It That Time, and Let's Get Down. They lack the usual spit and polish that Strait songs usually boast, and bring down the album from the 5 star level. While the melodies are passable, the lyrics could have used another rewriting on certain phrases and wording.
