Good freaky listening,

This is very offbeat but great listening. They're a very inventive band musically, some of the lyrics are superb and the album has a really good feel. I've played this dozens of times and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Weird War's freakiest record. Skuzzy and mean; AK-47, If You Can't Beat Em Bite Em, and Tess, a song about Tess of D'Urbavilles (?) by Thomas Hardy I believe, are my faves. One by One is a recitation of the little Red Book over a beautiful, minor key , pastoral guitar piece. Really moving. The rest is funky scuzz rock for the most part besides Tess which is a Tyrannosaurus REx style bongo piece and maybe the highlight of the album. Get it!

Beef: the vocals are overwhelmed by the cheap guitar sound. Who mixed this thing?! On the plus side, the songs are great - 9 or ten gems of lyrical wit and funky grooves and psychedelic sonics. They're live show is highly recommended, and will probably make this album make a lot more sense.

This is an interesting record from the prolific group. They are workaholics. More funk and gospel. This is better than the first Weird War CD but not as good as "I Suck On That Emotion." The Songs "Store Pot Pot" and "AK_47" are some of their best. They are a great live band. These records are just signposts along the way. Michelle Mae is cool.

album of the year so far!!!!,
This review is from: If You Can't Beat Em Bite Em (Audio CD)
best thing i've heard from svenonious and M.M for ages. better than scene creamers and the original weird war. bit more like the make up except with more flashy guitar riffs. buy it if you like all that stuff. sounds somewhere between funkadelic and royal trux. favourite tracks: store bought pot, ak.47, all the others too.

THis sounds like a pile multi vehicle pile up. Ween, Funkadelic, Butthole surfers and even Frank Zappa and the Mothers can be found in the wreckage of "If you can't join em, bite em"
I liked it. Good for background listening, the time when lyrics truely sink in. Witty, albeit a little sophmoric, the juvinile blend of raunch, funk, and weird rock-idelica makes for a tastey sonic dandwich spread. great on toast, too! |
