Book Description

Red punch, tubas blasting, and iguanas. While they might seem unrelated to the Bible, this book gathers them together and, between snickers, presents a serious message of how kids can pass along the message of Jesus. (20061114)

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This gentle approach to witnessing to our faith will make sense to kids. Who wouldn't want to share a gift that brings so much wisdom, enlightenment and fun? If You Give a Boy a Bible is aimed at children ages four through eight years of age, but I'm willing to predict that most grown ups will learn a thing or two from this enjoyable book." (Daves-InfoRama.com 20050128)

"This book is an absolute must have book for every Christian family. I know I say that about nearly every children's book I review, but this one is truly a great book and one that is fun to read. It was a true joy to read and one I hope will lead to more books in the future. The author did a wonderful job with the story and I hope to see more just like it." (Trisha Bleau T4J Library 20050420)

A fun way to introduce kids to the Bible! (Kids Bookshelf 20060101)

A spin off the popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie book tells the story of what might happen if you give a boy a Bible. First he'll want you to read it, then he might want to act out some of the battle scenes. Some stories might make him happy or sad, and some will make him curious, but all of the stories will make him think about God and his love. A fun way to introduce kids to the Bible! (Christina Lewis KidsBookshelf )

More About the Author

I was born in Memphis. Elvis went to high school with my dad - how's that for impressive? He still has his Humes High School yearbook which Elvis signed. Any bidders?

Grew up in West Texas. Currently live within 3 miles of my childhood home.

Married a total babe knockout with a personality and soul to match who greatly enhances the attractive potential of our 3 children. Family is gold - treasure it.

Learned puppetry as a junior higher in church. I created a puppet character named "Gerbert" way back then which eventually became the lead in an internationally broadcast television series by the same name. In fact, TV Guide named it "one of the top ten preschool shows" in March 1994. And, it was nominated for an ACE Award.

My first book deal was a Gerbert book, too. "Gerbert's Favorite Bible Stories" on Chariot Press. I've written over 40 books to date and, hopefully, will continue to add more to that. I've illustrated most of my books.

Currently, I travel around trying to make folks laugh a little (or a lot) and sharing an insight or two worth gleaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous Message Promotes Importance of the Bible for Kids, February 4, 2005
This review is from: If You Give a Boy a Bible (Hardcover)
On the surface, hot tubs, red Kool Aid, iguanas and shish-kebabs may not seem the perfect enticements towards promoting Bible reading for young children, but a reading of Andy Holmes newest book If You Give a Boy a Bible (Kregel Kidzone, May 2004, hardcover, 32 pages) shows that you can't make assumptions when it comes to kids.

Author and Illustrator Andy Holmes takes a humorous approach towards evangelization with this book, which is loosely reminiscent of the classic If You Give a Moose a Muffin. The opening pages of the story find a father sharing the Bible with his son and in turn taking time to read it with him. From here, the true action of the book begins as this gift leads to all kinds of imaginative thoughts. As the boy learns stories from the Bible, he begins to act out the accounts in his own little world.

Sprinkled throughout the book are references to classic Old Testament accounts. Readers will love how the boy absorbs and then finds his own take on the stories of Noah, Joseph, Moses and others. Holmes illustrations lend life to the story - I was particularly drawn to the variety of facial expressions in the book.

The book's end finds the boy sharing the gift he's received and loved so much with a friend. This gentle approach to witnessing to our faith will make sense to kids - who wouldn't want to share a gift that brings so much wisdom, enlightenment and fun? If You Give a Boy a Bible is aimed at children ages four through eight years of age, but I'm willing to predict that most grown ups will learn a thing or two from this enjoyable book.

I love this book. As full time children and family evangelists we travel around the country and offer this book for sale at our resource table and it consistanly sells out! The illustrations are fantastic. It's a book you and your children will read over and over again. I DO and I'm 48!

This review is from: If You Give a Boy a Bible (Hardcover)
This was a great story in the same realm as "if you give a moose a muffin" - this book give humerous ways to tell Biblical stories, with a boys perspective, and ending with a chance to share or give a Bible to a friend. I'm giving a copy to each of my 3 youngest grandsons to get them thinking. P.S. There is also a girls version which I've purchased and feel the same about.
