WOW. After loving If You Stay, I had high hopes for If You Leave. Madison was a terrific character in that novel, and was definitely worthy of a story of her own. What I didn't count on was Gabriel Vincent. This man, his story... blew this book wide open. I won't continue to draw comparisons between the two, but for as much as I loved If You Stay, I loved If You Leave even more.

If You Leave is a fairly heavy story. First there's Madison, who hinted at having some issues in If You Stay, but since that was Mila's story, we never got the full picture. Madison's issue is her parents' relationship and deaths. Not only did her parents die and leave her responsible for their business and younger sister Mila, but she also had a lot of unresolved feelings toward her abusive father and accepting mother. Madison's answer was to lock it all away. Keep her feelings to herself, and just keep living. Eventually, something's got to give, and a push comes in the form of her best friend's brother, Gabriel.

Then you have Gabriel Vincent. Gabriel is a former Army Ranger, and it is obvious from the first page that he is in a bad way. Gabriel is drowning in guilt, so much so that he's barely hanging on. I'm not going to endlessly analyze Gabriel, because I couldn't possibly do him justice. I can say that Cole did an excellent job in the characterization of a man who may have left the battlefield, but the fight is far from over. I truly feel that she did a beautiful, thorough, and realistic job with Gabriel's story. She does justice and honor those who have and continue to serve. She is also bringing awareness to the mental trauma sustained in war. This, in my opinion, is what makes If You Leave shine.

I know that I haven't touched on the romance aspect yet, but I did love it.

I did not like this one as much as If You Stay. It was better than ok because Courtney Cole is a good writer. The plot was good. The characters were very likeable. The plot centers around a former Army Ranger who has PTSD and a heroine who has been damaged by a dysfunctional family life while growing up. I especially loved the author's treatment of the PTSD issue. It was written with respect and knowledge and you can tell she did her homework. Her characters were very real and believable.

So why didn't I rate it higher? I did not develop a connection with the love story. IMO the characters did not have enough chemistry with each other. I found myself more interested in what was going on with Mila and Pax from book 1. Overall definitely worth the read though.

I will admit that I'm a huge wimp when it comes to dealing with conflict in books, which is why it was so difficult to finish the first book in Courtney Cole's Beautifully Broken series, If You Stay. The story is beautifully written but the tumultuous relationship between bad boy Pax Tate and Mila Hill seriously messed with my emotions. Cole has a gift for writing about tortured heroes, because the male protagonist in book two, Gabe Vincent, broke my heart into tiny pieces on several occasions. I was constantly on edge while reading If You Leave, preparing myself for the inevitable moment(s) when I would break down in tears and Courtney Cole didn't disappoint.
If You Leave is the story of Gabe and Madison (Mila's sister), both who have an incredible amount of emotional baggage between them, making it difficult to entertain the possibility of a relationship between the pair. Gabe is an ex-Army Ranger with a severe case of PTSD and Madison is still haunted by the memory of her abusive father. From the moment they meet, their chemistry is evident, and their attraction to each other grows despite their hesitation to act on their feelings. The anticipation builds until it's impossible to ignore the crackling tension between them.
After reading If You Leave, I felt completely drained (in a good way). There's so much that happens in such a short time, leaving little reprieve from the drama that continuously unfolds. As much as I loved If You Stay, I love If You Leave even more. The story is intense and emotional, confronting real-life issues head-on and unapologetically. I connected with Gabe and Madison, sharing in their raw pain and vulnerabilities, which made me more invested in the outcome of the story. Cole's writing drew me in and kept me transfixed until the final page. I'm so glad that I chanced upon If You Stay because this series is unbelievably amazing and I'm excited to follow its continuation.

My Thoughts:

Much like in her first installment of the Beautifully Broken Series, If You Stay, Courtney Cole doesn't pull any punches and drops you straight into the storyline and into the action with If You Leave. I didn't think it would be possible to like this book as much as I liked Mila and Pax's story, but this novel absolutely blew me away and has stuck with me long after I finished the last page.

The name of this series Beautifully Broken could not be more apt. With this series, Courtney shows some very real and ugly truths in the world. Some serious issues concerning some very sadly damaged people. Yet, she also intersperses these times with lighthearted moments and bone meltingly sexy scenes as well. This novel reaffirmed my belief and my trust in Courtney's ability to tell a painful story that is real for so many, and in telling the story, she is able to evoke feelings of hope and the belief that even in the darkest of places, there is the chance for a light to lead you out to the other side.

I absolutely loved both of these characters. Of course I have been known to constantly fall in love with these book boyfriends, and the honorable, stoic, sexy hunk of alpha that is Gabe is certainly no exception. But for me, in this book, there was something that really called out to me about Maddy. She too is broken. But just in different ways. There was just something so heartbreaking about her. Seeing her have so much taken away from her and so much threatened. I NEEDED her to have her happily ever after. I felt so ecstatically rewarded by the end, so full of pure, blissful happiness that both she and Gabe received their so well deserved HEA.

"It's like I'm not whole when I'm not with you. You're a piece of me.
