Editorial Reviews

2013 debut album from the Indie trio. Recorded over a period of months at home and in various spaces around London, it was produced by guitarist Igor Haefeli with additional production from Rodhaidh McDonald (The xx, Adele) and Jolyon Vaughan Thomas, and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83) at High Bank Studios. Daughter are a London-based trio consisting of Elena Tonra (vocals, guitar), Igor and Remi Aguilella (percussion). The band started life in 2010 as an outlet for Elena's musings. After recording a demos EP, Elena joined forces with Igor, then fellow classmates studying music at college. A four-track EP, His Young Heart, was self released in April 2011, and with Remi completing the line up soon after, The Wild Youth EP was released in late 2011. On the strength of these releases alone they have gained a loyal fanbase which continues to grow as public and media alike discover their charms.

This is the saddest, most depressing album I've ever heard in my life. That isn't to say that it's not good because it really, really is. The songs are beautiful and moving and heartfelt. The vocals and lyrics are gorgeous. But know, there isn't a happy song in the bunch. Some of the tracks are upbeat but it's a trick. Poppy tune for lyrics about how someone she adored cheated on her or how underneath it all she's a human and she's dying here. I hope people buy this because, truly, every single song is terrific, it's great music. But it will make you cry.

There really is no other word to describe this album. Her voice has a deep and airy quality that sounds soulful and honest and tragic all at the same time. Her lyrics are honest and real and make you really think while you listen. And if you don't feel like it, the music is stunning on its own.
The singer's voice and the truthful quality of the lyrics are very similar to Florence and the Machine with a little mixture of Portishead.
I feel like I discovered a hidden gem with this band. I highly recommend to those who love strong female voices/lyrics, and indie mixed with a little of rock and soul.

Elena Tonra's vocals and lyrics are not for the faint of heart. She lays herself bare and if you accept her invitation to reside in the raw spaces of her heart you will be richly rewarded and perhaps your own heart will be strengthened by knowing that this small woman can have a giant impact on the deepest parts of your psyche. How's that for hyperbole! But don't take my word on faith, check out the truth for yourself: listen to the samples, or better yet, check out her Tiny Desk Concert on NPR. If you accept her invitation, you will have found a wonderful companion who will have your undying loyalty - you will never want to leave Daughter.

Daughter is the type of band that understands you without trying to. They’re trying to express themselves with their music but along the way they express you too. Or at least, they do for me. If You Leave is a story about heartbreak. It’s about feeding the monster inside of you, something, we all have and realizing that we’re still human. This entire album can easily become the backdrop for a heartfelt tv show drama. (Seriously, close your eyes and you can imagine Human, Amsterdam, Shallow as the music for Grey’s or supernatural or something super intense and heartbreaking movie/tv show.) I know I’ve been handing out high ratings for a lot of albums lately, but this band, Daughter, completely deserve it. And I cannot wait to see them this fall (hopefully).

I adore the way Daughter can make me feel with the single beat of a drum, a few chords from a guitar, and lovely sung high notes. In most of the songs, there’s an echo attached to the vocals which is something I’m very picky about. I can’t stand when songs have an echo that is useless to the song but with Daughter, they pull it off. Everything compliments each other rather than takes away from the songs. I also love how easy it is to relate to their music with lyrics about broken romances in Still with lyrics, “Biting words like a wolf howling. Hate is spitting out each others mouths. But we’re still sleeping like we’re lovers.” And no matter what, people are still human in Human with, “Buried deep within, there’s a human.”

If You Leave by Daughter is a gorgeous album. There’s heartache, love, life, death, and well…Youth and growing up that’s shown throughout the album. I recommend this album to everyone especially to lovers of indie and acoustic music. Favourite songs off of this album are: Still, Human, Youth, and Shallows.

I absolutely adore this artist. I love every single track. There is not a song I do not enjoy. Her sweet, inviting tone accompanies novel instruments that just make this wonderful and unique. Keep on making music, Daughter!
Highly recommended for those who like folk and soft alternative. Jazz fans may like this as well. None of her songs are "crazy", "racy" or "wild", and most contain sad or depressing tones. Is that bad? No. It's heartwarming.

"If You Leave" is truly outstanding for a first full-length album from a band. When I first heard it I had to play it through and through, sometimes twice a day or more, and that is something that I almost never do with any album, new or otherwise.

The only deficiency is that, somewhat normal for a relatively young and relatively recently formed band, the overall sound (and the musicians' playing styles and just their general affect) is similar enough from track to track that one might not need a full album of this material. Yet I do like each song individually. At least three, if not four, tracks are permanent additions to my portable player and long-term favorites list.

I have recommended this album (with well received results) to friends for its depth of feeling and overall emotional impact. It tells a story of a period in a young (though adult) person's life in a way that is quite enrapturing. Bravo to Elena Tonra and her bandmates for having the audacity to go directly to this material rather than slowly working their way up to it over a much longer time as some bands might.
