Editorial Reviews

Olivia Newton-John: If You Love Me, Let Me Know ; 1974 MCA Records MCA-411 Long Play Record ; In May and August of 1974, Olivia Newton-John broke through in a big way with this album, the number five title track written by John Rostil, and the number one smash "I Love You, I Honestly Love You" by Jeff Barry and Peter Allen quickly established Olivia as a superstar to be reckoned with. The album is beautifully produced by John Farrar with his friend Bruce Welch of Marvin, Welch & Farrar fame helping out with the production on two of the tracks, Gerry Rafferty's "Mary Skeffington" and Olivia Newton-John's sole composition, the acoustic "Changes." The singer is a very good songwriter, and why she didn't put more songs together, or cover some of the wonderful material her mentor was releasing elsewhere, is something to speculate. "Home Ain't Home Anymore" is the one co-write of Farrar's on this collection. Their version of Brian Wilson's "God Only Knows" is short and intriguing, and it is interesting to hear Farrar create a light environment for what was such a big production number for "The Beach Boys." "You Ain't Got the Right" is smart country pop, with Newton-John in excellent voice and showing a remarkable consistency. Barbara Keith's "Free the People" is, in the hands of Delaney & Bonnie, a wonderfully deep gospel experience. Countrified and given a snappy treatment here, it remains a good song, but doesn't have the balance that Bonnie Bramlett breathed into her version. It's the hits here, though, which are outstanding, and the bright pop is better suited to the title track than to Barbara Keith's masterpiece. "If You Love Me Let Me Know" is a great question for lovers who aren't quite sure, and a marvelous bridge from country music to pop.

If You Love Me, Let Me Know is thirty minutes and eight seconds long and was released in May of 1974. If You Love Me, Let Me Know reached #1 in both the U.S. Billboard 200 Album and the U.S. Country Album chart and went Gold. Though the album has mostly a country\western sound to it, there are some songs that are easy listen as well. Olivia Newton-John has an excellent voice on this album and she has a good range as well. When I got these albums I did not know she was a country artist. If You Love Me, Let Me Know is a great album and I am giving it an AAA+++.

I bought this new in 1974 or so and liked it. It had groove damage from a cheap record player, so I wanted to replace it. This time I had a high end turntable and cartridge. I wanted to transfer the audio to CD because the album didn't seem to be released in CD format. What I noticed is that the album sounded like it mastered from a 5th generation tape. The sound is dull and lifeless for the most part. The sound quality varies from song to song, and the eq seems to shift sometimes DURING the song. Track 2 immediately comes to mind. All rather pointless for a 30+ year old recording, tho. It just means I have to work harder to correct the deficiencies in the computer. I hope she releases this for MP3 download like she did for most of her other early recordings.

I had this album as a teenager and loved it and now couldn't find it on mp3. So when I saw it on Amazon, I had to have it. My husband was able to transfer it to mp3 so now what's old it new again. This arrived in pristine, cared-for condition, very carefully packaged, so thanks for taking such care with this item!
