3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not Great
If you like Taking Back Sunday and you like Fall Out Boy, these guys will be right up your alley. To be honest though, it is kind of a frustrating CD to listen to. On some songs (Elevators are Matchmakers, Patrick, My Side of the Story) June hit it right on head. Catchy chorus & riff, good lyrics, layered guitars and melody, dynamic but not for the sake of the change...

A Kid's Review
This review is from: If You Speak Any Faster (Audio CD)
June, a 4 piece melodic rock band from chicago, IL haven't quite made it big yet. In theory, they probably never will. But it's not becuase they've been marketed poorly. Victory records, an *independent* label from the same city, have spent alot of time and money plugging this band as being for fans of fall out boy, taking back sunday and spitalfield, something that should gain them scene cred, but hasn't. You see, the secret is that june doesn't really sound anything like the above, but at the same time, they do. Confused yet? lemmie break it down...fall out boy, although one of my favorites, is highly predictable. You just know that there's going to be some big vocals, power chords and a hook in each song. That's a given. With June however, you never know what you're going to get next. Take the intro on "I write B movies". At first listen, it just sounds like noise, but after a couple more, you start to wonder how chord combinations like that are even possible. "speak up" and "patrick" may come off a bit generic at first, but soon you realize that they stand up to repeated listens becuase they're not. There isn't really a standard formula to june's music either. If a hook shows up, it could be 2 minutes into the song, and before the next 20 seconds is up, it could very well be back for a second sing-a-long. Verses? Two are usually standard for a pop song. June might have 2, 3 or even 4! You can't really package the music on "if you speak any faster" because it's all over the place. If your thing is clean, cookie-cutter rock with a bow attached, you may want to pass on June. Oh, and by the way, the lead singer sounds exactly like patrick stump (sp?) from fall out boy. It's easy to market you when your vocalist can pass as a mega star to the untrained ear. I guess the irony in all of this is that june isn't as famous as, say, FOB, even though they've been marketed to be as such, but in all honesty, they're much more innovative and deserve to be placed in a seperate catagory.

This review wasn't meant to make any sense, and neither is June's music. Just buy the record already and try something different. June makes true indie music your ears will thank you for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great cd from an up and coming band, March 10, 2007
This review is from: If You Speak Any Faster (Audio CD)
I first got this CD after I saw June open a show I went to.... I liked what I heard live so I gave them a try, and now I love them. This cd is great, especially if you like Warped Tour type bands... it is pop/rock-ish. They are slightly better live, especially the backing vocals. Some of the backing vocals on the cd just don't sound right to me, but the CD is great nonetheless. I think the music (instruments) sticks out as being really good too, I love just hearing the intro of the first song "Speak Up". Some other favorites on this cd are "I've Got The Time If You Have The Argument", "My Side of the Story", "The City" (probably their hardest song), and "OK Corral". A lot of the songs are very catchy. If you like what you hear, definitely check them out live, they have so much energy and put on a great show.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love em' or hate em', you can't deny their talent, November 21, 2005
This review is from: If You Speak Any Faster (Audio CD)
June is one of those bands you either love or hate. They don't take too many chances, or really experiment with different styles, but what they do, they do well. The music is very upbeat, with the pop-punk-emo formula made famous by countless others all but perfected. I'd have to disagree with the reviewer below me who says they sound nothing like fall out boy. While it's true that there is no screaming on this record, june's vocalist is a dead-ringer for patrick stump from fall out boy. What i can agree on; they sound NOTHING like Taking back sunday, which is a good thing in my opinion.

Pop-whateverthef*ck has been famous for quite some time in chicago, and becuase of that, june's career may or may not be short lived. It all depends on how the public receives "if you speak any faster". As of right now, it isn't the most popular record, but why not is anyone's guess. The music is as accessible as anything by blink of fallout, but it's also got an indie heart as well. The production is polished to a squeak, which helps it to fit in with fellow chi-town peers, and the urge to get up and dance is felt throughout 3/4 of faster's songs.

If only they could escape the compairisons to hawthorne heights and taking back sunday, they might be able to get big. Those comparisons hurt more than they help. they lead you to believe that june is a post-hardcore act, which couldn't be further from the truth (hence the terrible reviews). If you're look for something like TBS, look elsewhere.

For fans of: fall out boy, spitalfield and the audition.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Can't Speak Any Faster, November 20, 2005

This record is refreshing. In a time where music is dominated by screamo clones, and countless numbers bands who really don't have their own sound, June is a breathe of fresh air into a pop-punk scene that is all but dying right now. There's been many comparisons to bands like Fall Out Boy and Victory's own comparison to Taking Back Sunday, but there's really no resemblance between either of those two and this band. The thing that makes this album so good though is that every song is solid. There's not one on here that is bad or out of place. June's melodies are infectious, their playing is perfect, and the production is great. Start to finish the album will grow on you immediately and you will instantly find yourself singing along to all the catchy tunes. Recommended for fans of pop-punk and emo especially.

Opening up with "Speak Up", you will instantly know what June has to offer. Catchy melodic hooks, over top of driving rhythms, and emotional lyrics. I don't understand why this album has been getting such bad reviews. I can only guess that people that are listening to this have either only listened to one or two songs, or they are wasting too much of their time comparing June to Fall Out Boy, Green Day and Jimmy Eat World, which the band is nothing like. June is much more indie influenced than any of those punk rock influenced bands, and has a very distinct difference in sound from them. Go ahead and try to listen to songs like "Patrick" or "Scandals and Scoundrels" and not getting them stuck in your head. It's not just a record that has a few instant hits, and a lot of filler though. June constantly keeps changing things up and keeping you interested throughout the 11 tracks found on the album, going from the upbeat pop-punk of "I've Got The Time If You Have The Argument" to quirky acoustic laiden stylings like "My Side Of The Story". However each will draw your attention as much as the other. The fact that every song is a keeper only helps the album. Basically right now screamo is the hot thing, and with bands like Hawthorne Heights, Fall Out Boy, Senses Fail, and The Used all reigning supreme in that category, it's nice to hear a band come around that definitely has its own unique sound and style. Beginning to end there's no weak points on this album, and that's what counts.

I'd encourage you to listen to the album in its entirety before making any judgements on it. I guarantee if you do, you're likely to find one of the best emo/pop-punk albums to be released this year. Wasting time comparing June to other bands is useless, just enjoy the music for what its worth. It's definitely a breathe of fresh air in a screamo and hardcore heavy music world at the moment. If you give it a chance, I'm pretty sure you're going to find a lot of enjoyment in this album. If not you'll just have one less good cd in your collection.

If you like Taking Back Sunday and you like Fall Out Boy, these guys will be right up your alley. To be honest though, it is kind of a frustrating CD to listen to. On some songs (Elevators are Matchmakers, Patrick, My Side of the Story) June hit it right on head. Catchy chorus & riff, good lyrics, layered guitars and melody, dynamic but not for the sake of the change itself. But they can't seem to put it together everytime. and its less than listenable when they miss, its noisy and doesnt hold your attention like the other songs. So you flip back two songs to listen to that awesome song you just heard. i think thier next release will sound more coherient as an album, where this one has a dizzy range and tempo. So, buy it if you are comfortable with slightly over half of the album being really good, and the other half being somewhat annoying.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: If You Speak Any Faster (Audio CD)
I really believe that June is oe of the next big things from Victory Records, home to Silverstein, Bury Your Dead, Hawthorne Heights and Atreyu. all the songs are good on this CD and has a few stand out tracks like the Single Patrick. Just give June a chance and you will love them.
