Numeroff has provided us with a holiday version of her popular "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" vein of books. I have the other three titles--Mouse, Moose, and Pig--which remain favorites with all of the children in my life. Whenever I pull one of these books out for storytime, I get a gleeful response from my listeners. I just bought this one and I know it will be just as popular, especially during the winter holidays.
This time the Mouse and his friend go to the movies, eat popcorn, decorate a tree, play in the snow and keep us entertained for 32 pages. I enjoy reading these books and the children enjoy the illustrations and the story. I recommend this book as a gift or an addition to your own library.

My boys love mouse a cookie, pig a pancake, and moose a muffin so we were excited to order this newest book. However, I don't think that the storyline of this book flows as well as the others do. The transition from one antic to another seems to be a bit of a stretch. The mouse is still as engaging and energetic as ever. The illustrations by Felcia Bond are wonderful. My children still really enjoy this book but they haven't asked to have it read to them repeatedly like they do for the other books. When my husband finished reading it to them, he just looked at me and said that this was "lame".

If you take a mouse to the movies, he'll ask for popcorn. When you bring him some, it will remind him of Christmas and he'll want to string it...then he'll demand a tree to hang it from...seeing the snow on the ground will make him want to build a snowmouse, then a snow fort, a snow fort fight...and on and on. This little mouse is as busy and demanding as ever in this fourth book of the series. Laura Numeroff's simple, funny text, captures the essence of the pre-school mind as her mouse jumps from one idea to the next, in his logical little mind, until finally coming full circle, back to the popcorn. Felicia Bond's colorful, busy and expressive illustrations compliment the story perfectly and your youngsters will love finding all the special little details, hidden in the pictures. Children of all ages will be amused and delighted as they enjoy the chaos this little mouse wreaks on his human friend. This is a wonderful holiday book the whole family will enjoy.

We must confess -- barely a day after Halloween, and we're Christmas shopping already! This book is top on our list of gifts to give to the under 5 age group.
It all begins with a movie, and then just as happens with the original story "If You Give a Mouse A Cookie," one thing oh so logically leads to another! Yes, our favorite (nameless) thinking mouse is back, with a story just in time for the holidays! As much as we love Pigs and Mooses (see related stories by this author), in our house the mouse is our favorite.
The story is engaging enough that adults enjoy reading aloud, the illustrations invite looks for all the details.
Definitely a book you can't go wrong with -- a great holiday (or pre-holiday) gift for 0 to 5!

If You Take A Mouse To The Movies by Laura Numeroff, with Illustrations by Felicia Bond, A Laura Geringer Book, 2000.
This is an excellent continuation of the collaboration of Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond on childrens books based upon fanciful IF/THEN statements. If you take a Mouse to the movies, then he will want popcorn; THEN, this results in his stringing the popcorn to decorate the Christmas Tree (which is the central theme of this beautiful book), and then, and so on. Each improbable THEN is the joy of this book. For example, the little Mouse is given just the right clothes for the wintry weather, including a cute red woolen cap, with holes for his large ears. Finally, after making snowmen, decorating a Christmas Tree, you will come full circle, and, after giving the Mouse another batch of popcorn, again, hell want you to take him to the moves.
I enjoyed reading this book to my grandchildren. The younger boys (twins) were captivated by the richness of details in Felicia. Bonds illustrations, while the older grandchildren (especially the girl) rolled their eyes at the silliness of each new IF/THEN situation for example, a Mouse making a snowman and (!) with snowy white mouse ears! The Christmas theme makes this an ideal gift for the impending holidays.

You really can't go wrong with Laura Numeroff's tremendously appealing series about the mouse who doesn't hesitate to ask for what he wants! Part of the fun is the unexpected leap from he has now to what he wants next. As our third-grader put it, it wouldn't be that funny if the book just said, "If you take a mouse to the movies, he'll want to see the movie."
On the other hand, I understand those readers who say this is not quite as good as others in the series, notably, "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie." Some of the if/then conjunctions just aren't as clever as in the past. Moreover, the title sets up some false expectations that the mouse's appetites will take place within a movie theatre, or, at least, within an urban setting. Instead, almost the whole book involves requests for holiday items, most of which are found in the house. Perhaps if the book (and the title) pointed to the book's Christmas theme, one's expectations would be met and the book would satisfy more than it does.
Still, I think any child will enjoy this book, and the warm, humorous (cute, frankly!) pictures by the imaginative Felicia Bond. The illustrations are interesting without being cluttered, colorful without being assaultive. Just the thing for a fun holiday read!
