LOVED this album in High School. Swingin' stuff, with huge horns, great vocals on very memorable songs. Used to turn my friends on to this, as few people had ever heard of them...they thought it was a fab album indeed! Sadly, I subsequently lost the album, so I am delighted it has been reissued! I just wish Amazon would let you sample the tunes, you'd hear what I mean!

IF is a unique sound from the early fusion era. The group got some attention during the heydays of underground FM radio (such as WHCN, Hartford). They have a style that is similar to Gentle Giant and Traffic. Track two, "What Did I Say About The Box, Jack" is a SUPERB instrumental. Also, check out IF 2.

I bought this album as a teenage kid in 1970. At the time my older brother had the first two albums by Blood Sweat and Tears and I had the first two by Chicago. It turns out that this was the album that stirred up my interest in Jazz and what later came to be called fusion.
The horn arrangements here are a bit different as there is no brass section (trumpet, trombone, etc.), the band having chosen to go with two saxophones or the sax/flute combo. This gave IF a unique and recognizable sound that remains distinctive. Both Dick Morrisey and Dave Quincy also had the ability to improvise quite well, something other bands at the time that had jazzy aspirations (DREAMS excluded) sorely lacked. Terry Smith's guitar playing/soloing is also up to the improvising challenge. To hear these guys do their thing over the rock rhythm section is still a pleasure.
Those new to IF may find the vocals of J.W. Hodkinson to be an acquired taste, but you will find him to be an integral part of the IF sound. Overall, I have found this music to stand the test of time very well, and can easily recommend the CD.
At the time, IF was pioneering the Jazz/Rock road in the pre-fusion era in Great Britain. (DREAMS was doing the same from the USA side.) Despite the amount of time that has passed since the initial release of this recording, the music has retained its edge and is well worth your time and attention. A pleasant listening experience awaits you.

If caught my attention because of their use of woodwinds instead of brass. The sound is lighter and more upbeat and the words are more of a story than the usual 70s brass bands. If you've wanted more than the typical band music but found the brass too much, this will be the sound you've been looking for. The members backgrounds show through as each is an accomplished musician. Listen to them as they go through the range of emotion and sound.

Great to see this reissued. i use to own a vinyl copy back in the days of vinyl. This falls in the jazz rock (not really jazz rock fusion) side of things with a soft machinesque influence , specially in the grooves, with an english rock and Santana (!) and maybe a bit of Blood sweat and tears or chicago influence... but not so much. Any ways this is a strong record and i beleive the best they ever did. Also the tunes are really well composed and extremely 'catchy'. Will be circling your mind for weeks after a few spins.

Read my write up for IF 3.

IF 1 and Live in Europe 72 are the start and end of a great lineup. Buy them both. Skip 2 & 3 and all four weak attempts without the second reeds player. Forgotten Roads is a Best of, and is a great mix, but strangely does not include "Your City is Falling" , but luckily that song is on the Live album. Also strangely, the live version of What did I say About the Box Jack is the weakest song on the live album.

If is very hard to locate in Amazon, because a zillion Disk titles hold the word "if". Thank you Repetoire and Castle for beating Capital to the punch and realizing that there is a market for this classic stuff. The Live in Europe '72 disk even contains the meaning of the title What Did I Say About the Box, Jack?

This is a wonderful album and I hope that we get the second, third and fourth albums in digital format. Beware, the track names are wrong - if you do not know the songs well enough, use the listing from the CD version to re-name the ones that are incorrect. So, five stars for the music but only four for the format.

I had the first two albums on vinyl when they first came out, purchased after reading a review in the Boston Globe. I think I still own them, though I haven't had a turntable for decades. I'm pretty sure I was the only kid in my town listening to these guys. Didn't know 'til now that these had been reissued. I'll read all the reviews here to see what I missed beyond IF2 and decide what to buy for my son, whom I've told of this band, though I had no way to have him listen 'til now. He will like much of this.
