Gritty, raw punk...What The Offspring used to be about,
By Rex Marksmanson "HEYO!" (Long Island, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ignition (Audio CD)
From the loud swearing in the beginning of "Session", it's not hard to tell what kind of album this will be. In your face, angry at the world, make no apologies punk rock. And believe it or not Dexter Holland and company are behind it all.Listening to an album like "Ignition" makes me start to long for the sound of early 90's punk. This is the kind of punk that sadly died long ago along with grunge and premature 1990's metal. But I suppose we must hold on to what we have left, and cherish it. Like I mentiod in the title, this is gritty and raw rock, nothing more and nothing less. The sound quality is great if you go by the standards there were when it was released (1992). Some may say the guitar work is not spectacular, and in that case they may be right. But, the fast riffs and slamming drums pretty much make this album what it is, which is brought together by Dexter's vocals, that are a split between whining and screaming. Now for those of you who think the title of this review is me accusing the modern Offspring as being sellouts, that's not it at all. What I am stating is The Offspring have evolved greatly, and left their punk rock roots behind, not a bad thing at all. Great album, from a band who is no longer what they used to be.

The Offspring at Their Greatest,
By Daimen Lynch (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews

You know those great CDs, where you pop it in, and enjoy every single song on the album to the fullest? This is one of those albums! The Offspring created this pure punk, and nearly perfect album in the early 1990's. It didn't have the success that their later records had, but it had the quality. Songs like Session, Kick Him When He's Down, Nothing From Something, and everything else are all incredible songs that could have been released as singles and been successful.

This cd is just amazing. I mean you really can't say much that is negative about this cd. My favorite song is Dirty Magic, but all of these songs are just incredible. The Offspring's new music isn't bad it's just very differant. This cd actually reminds me a little of Nirvana so if you like Nirvana you'll probably enjoy this cd. But I was a hardcore offspring fan a while ago and this cd just makes me remember the good old days so if you're looking for some 90's grunge this is the cd for you.

Great CD though not my favorite of the Offspring,

I dont really like most of the self titled CD so for me, Ignition is where it all started. This is there first really good CD though i personally prefer Ixnay on the Hombray and Smash. Here's a breakdown of the tracks-Session 9/10. Good song. Some of the guitar lines are quite good and in general the song maintains a strong force to it. -We are One 8/10. I like the intro guitar part alot but i think the bulk of the song is just shy of spectacular. Its still a good song though and i think the complete stop after the word "stop" is a nice touch. -Kick Him while he's Down 9/10. A good song though i dislike that the lyrics are almost inaudible. -Take it like a man 8/10. Another good one. -Get it Right 6/10. Its a decent song but it just lacks energy. -Dirty Magic 8/10. Slower song, with sad sounding melodies and lytics. Overall a good song. -Hypodermic 10/10. My favorite song on the CD, especially right at the great guitar part at the beginning. An energetic and fastpaced song. -Burn it Up 9/10. A song for the pyro in each of us, Burn it up is about torching cars and hurling molotovs. A good song. -No Hero 8/10. A well constructed bass line forms the melody of this song. Not a superb song but still rather good. -LAPD 6/10. Im not a big fan of this song. I like the slow buildup in the begining and the general oppressiveness of the song but passed that the song is a bit lacking. -Nothing from Something 7/10. Good but not great, this song is about prepping to lash out at others. -Forever and a Day 8/10. It has some nice bass playing and is in general a good song. In summary, I think Ignition is a good CD but i think their next two, Smash and Ixnay, are better. Ignition is better than the two most recent Offspring albums, Americana and Conspiracy of One.

Only the Best,
By Zoe Says (IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ignition (Audio CD)
The Offspring is an amazing band, and as I own all the albums except for their new one, Conspiracy of One, I must say that this album is by far the best in its more simplistic music, and deeper meanings.I won't go into which songs are my favorites and which aren't because frankly, each and every song on this great album has a message to it, and it's really up to the listener to decide. If you believe every review you read, you'd never buy this album. What some songs people loathe, others revere and vice versa. I won't say I adore every song, but it's still an amazing piece. If you aren't an Offspring fan yet, definitely give this CD a whirl, and you're apt to buy more!

One of the greatest ever,

This may not be an album that The Offspring hit big with, but it is still equally as good as Smash or Ixnay. This album would probably be better than Smash if it had better production. At times the guitar is difficult to hear and the music sometimes drowns out Dexter's vocals. But with songs like "Session","Nothing from Something","Kick Him When He's Down",and "Hypodermic"...this is a really great album. It has 12 songs on it and there are only 3 that i dislike, and the 9 songs that are good on this album are extremely good. These songs have meaning behind them and they have extremely good lyrics. While this one isnt as good as Smash,it is still extremely good, just take my word for it.

Totally awesome,

For all the people who have bought Americana, this album is by far the more superior of the two. Our favourite songs are Dirty Magic, Kick Him When He's Down, LAPD, Burn it Up however every tune is catchy, lyrical and damn right fan fricking tastic. When Offspring came to Western Australia (21-6-99), the concert was indescribably brilliant however spoilt by the fact that not one Ignition song was in the set. Surely, due to the fact that Americana was obviously already owned by every single person there, it would have been wise to publiscise the mostly unknown and understated not to mention underrated but totally, completely not to mention the utterly marvellous album Ignition! It fricking rocks, Offspring rocks. Ignition, their best album by a long way. Commercialism can go eat um yeah you get it. Ignition - what an awesome album.

Don't f*ck with us, or we'll f*ck with you,
This review is from: Ignition (Audio CD)
That lyric pretty much sums up the attitude of "Ignition," the 2nd studio album released by the Offspring. This album is fast, unapologetic and angry, yet it remains somewhat tongue in cheek and playful. The kick off to the album, "Session," starts with someone dropping the f bomb many times in succession. While the album speaks of some very serious subjects, it also adds in some Sublime-esque grooves/laid back lyrics to break things up. The result? The Offspring's best album, far and away -- even trouncing the likes of "Smash" and "Ixnay on the Hombre." The combination of punk, rock 'n roll, rebelliousness and playfulness make for a varied, extremely engaging listen. On "Dirty Magic," the middle-eastern esque guitar riff works wonderfully, a la their mega hit "Come Out and Play." "We Are One" is a boisterous tune about a band of trouble making punks rebelling against conformity. The lyrics are catchy, and the song blazes along at a breakneck clip. "LAPD" is very much like Sublime's "April 29, 1992," talking about the Rodney King riots, and general corruption of the LAPD. The Offspring use a much harder riff and lyrics to convey their point, but both bands seem to share a similar view. "Hypodermic" is also similar of Sublime's many druggie songs, talking about shooting up and the like. The overall feel of the album is much, much edgier than their later work -- even "Smash" can't match the intensity of the lyrics and riffs present on "Ignition."
The album flows very well; never am I inclined to skip a song, even after listening to it many times. The song quality is quite good -- no super crappy sound quality that plagued their first release. This is not the same band that released "Americana," "Conspiracy of One" etc.; even if you're annoyed by those releases, as many are, I'd really recommend giving this a shot. If you love those releases, you definately owe it to yourself to check out where the Offspring came from. Best tracks: Session, We Are One, and Dirty Magic (my choice for best Offspring song ever). |
