Editorial Reviews

2012 EP from the Metal band formed by former Helloween frontman Michael Kiske and featuring Kai Hansen (Helloween/Gamma Ray). Unisonic's music is very versatile and shows a broad approach to heavy rock, but never misses the power and strong, sticking melodies that made all the members famous in the metal scene in the first place. Ignition includes two new songs and two rarities. Earmusic.

I downloaded the mp3 album last night and have been listening to it non-stop ever since. I am a recent convert to Michael Kiske fandom through Kiske/Somerville and Place Vendome, and was pleasantly surprised to hear that Unisonic rocks quite a bit harder. Melodic, yes, but pretty aggressive, too. I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it power metal, but the eponymous track "Unisonic" is pretty close. Plus, the live version of "I Want Out" is pretty phenomenal. Finally, as much as I like those other projects, there's an obvious band vibe here that adds a certain something. This only whets my appetite for the forthcoming full-length. Can't wait!

'Ignition' is the debut EP of the supergroup Unisonic and it surely marks a promising start. Unisonic is comprised of Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Place Vendome), Kai Hansen (ex-Helloween, Gamma Ray), Mandy Meyer (ex-Gotthard, ex-Krokus) and Dennis Ward together with Kosta Zafiriou (Pink Cream 69, Place Vendome).

The EP starts off with 2 strong album tracks and also contains a song in demo form and a live song.

"Unisonic" is a short, up-tempo power metal number with a dose of hard rock. The song features an energetic groove, masterful guitar work, very strong melodic vocals and a catchy chorus. This is the natural choice for a single and a future live classic. "My Sanctuary" is a slower paced melodic rock song. The verses are filled with guitar leads and the chorus is a vocal highlight and catchy as hell. The song also features a very fitting solo section and a slower bridge that will work wonders in a live setting.

'Ignition' continues with the demo version of "Souls Alive". The song is mid paced, contains 2 solo sections, truly outstanding vocals, an atmospheric bridge, an addictive chorus and is the closest one to melodic power metal. If the demo version sounds that good then the album version will be excellent. The last song is a live rendition of the old Helloween classic "I Want Out", recorded in Loud Park Festival. This song is proof that Unisonic is a strong live band, that manages to pull off a very energetic and fast version of this anthem. Michael Kiske sings this track for the first time in 20 years and does it very convincingly.

All featured songs are memorable and especially the new material promises something fresh. The band didn't try to recreate the old Helloween sound; they rather focused on quality hard rock with addictive melodies. I personally can't wait for the release of Unisonic's full length debut album in March!

Unisonic and the "Iwant Out" live track are all you need at this point in time from this band, that statement includes their dissapointing debut album.

Unisonic is a European melodic hard rock supergroup that brings together singer Michael Kiske (Place Vendome, Kiske-Somerville) and guitarist Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray) for the first time since their Helloween glory days. It also features Pink Cream 69 members Dennis Ward and Kosta Zafiriou, Gotthard guitarist Mandy Meyer, and Vanden Plas keyboardist Gunter Werno.

Released ahead of the full-length Unisonic debut, the 4-song Ignition single/EP gives fans a preview of what's to come as well as an exclusive surprise or two. Here's what you get:

1. Unisonic - This is an upbeat, hard-charging rocker, and one of the better songs on the full-length. Kiske does some rapid-fire vocals on the verses of this one.
2. My Sanctuary - Another winner from the full-length. This is a lot like something you'd find on the Place Vendome debut, but just a tad more rocking.
3. Souls Alive (demo) - This is a demo version of a song that also appears on the full-length. It's not much different from the final version, and since this version also appears on the limited edition of Unisonic, it's no longer an exclusive to this EP.
4. I Want Out (live) - Now we're talking! It's sad that the best song on this EP isn't even a Unisonic song, but having Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen together performing one of Helloween's all-time classics is well worth the price of admission.

Now that the Unisonic debut is out, there's only one reason to buy Ignition, and that's the live version of "I Want Out." The smart money seems to be on downloading (legally, of course) just that track, but if you're a collector and can catch it at a reasonable price, the CD version of Ignition is still worth picking up.
