5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible world music mass
This volume took a tremendous musical risk that succeeds beautifully. It should surpass Misa Criolla and Misa Luba as the prime example of successful inculturation of music for the Mass. It has included significant cultural concepts by expanding beyond the core music required for a Mass.

This volume took a tremendous musical risk that succeeds beautifully. It should surpass Misa Criolla and Misa Luba as the prime example of successful inculturation of music for the Mass. It has included significant cultural concepts by expanding beyond the core music required for a Mass.

The entrance song includes five native songs with native texts including phrases such as "In the home of the Great Father I will dance and celebrate", "The sun sets, the celebration begins", "I leave the forest to wait your arrival", "The moon is a fish in the drinking bowl". The song does everything an entrance song should do in calling people to gather as a worshipping assembly; it does so with a recognition of this group, this time.

The Kyrie and Our Father are limited to the standard text. The remaining required chants are supplemented with native songs. The supplementation is always theologically sound: For the Gloria, "You became a child in your desire to live"; the Alleluia, "try his love here next to me"...

The performance includes a Jazz Symphony and Symphonic Choir; the magic is that these European elements are put to the service of the indigenous Mass rather than the more common using of indigenous elements in a European Mass.

For religious musicians, ethnomusicologists, world music specialists ... this should be required listening. For the rest of us, we get pure, unadulterated pleasure listening.

Marlui Miranda was a guest lecturer/performer for a music class of mine at Dartmouth College. Her work is fascinating. Marlui is a bridge between Western culture and the indigenous music, ritual, and culture of Brazilian natives with little exposure to Europeans. Through dedication, she has learned to perform these pieces masterfully, thus earning the respect and blessings of the tribe and the right to record them. The songs and rituals are fascinating. Definitely check out this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars a mystery of collaboration, October 23, 2005
This review is from: Ihu 2 - Kewere:Rezar:Prayer (Audio CD)
I have been reading some about Marlui Miranda - picked this CD up on somewhat of a whim - and it joins the increasing search to integrate indigenous music - from Aaron Copland, Sibelius, and most recently Golijov - into a symphonic suite - in this case a Mass - in ways that are truly glorious. She is really remarkable and this work is one of the most remarkable of any in this genre I have heard - can only imagine what it would sound like in a concert hall!! She is a composer and translator of real strength and originality. Try this one first.
