I worked with Marlui on the soundtrack to "At Play in the Fields of the Lord". One of the most fantastic and soulful voices I've ever worked with. She is an expert on the musics and cultures of indigenous tribes in the Amazon rain forest. But her new album is not mere reproductions of tribal songs fit for ethnomusicologists. Oh, no. She's 'interpreted' them, made them her own, infused them with her own voice while keeping the raw spirit alive. I play this CD over and over, it's a rare treat. It features the work of Uakti and Gilberto Gil and many others. Treat yourself to this recording.

This music is sublime and its power lies in its ability to speak to the soul of all willing to be transformed. It is not necessary to know the cultural or geographical details, (although they too touch a chord,) as it transcends the cognitive and linear manner of knowing.
Marlui Miranda's work is laced with humility and awe. The cover notes add to the experience by roughly translating the myths and the rites from which the songs originated.
The manner by which she remained faithful to their tones, patterns of sonorous sounds and harmonies is made even more complex by her dedication to preserving the ancestral and archaic themes and languages.
It is a total work of art.

This extraordinary CD is everything the other reviewers had noted but more. The arrangements are all varied and invocative of other musical idioms while remaining Amazonian at its heart: Steve Reich's pulses, Terry Riley's syncopations, Mississippi blues, Navajo slow dances, Aleut mouth music, tropical forest ambiance and bird sounds, Bulgarian women's chorus. Each bend of the river provides surprises of new sounds, feelings, rhythms, patterns. Neither ethnographic field recordings nor cheesy pop tropical impressions, Miranda's music captures the wide scope of the native populations. And as the CD progresses, we feel going deeper into the land, farther away from urban influences. In short, this recording is magical, modern in its inventiveness yet ancient, and important both for preserving the spirit of the native peoples but also for ourselves. This recording will refreshen your life.

This cd... it's a kind of evocation, a playground for the spirits of our ancestors...this cd is basic.

Marlui Miranda was a guest lecturer/performer for a music class of mine at Dartmouth College. Her work is fascinating. Marlui is a bridge between Western culture and the indigenous music, ritual, and culture of Brazilian natives with little exposure to Europeans. Through dedication, she has learned to perform these pieces masterfully, thus earning the respect and blessings of the tribes and the right to record the songs. The songs and rituals are fascinating. Definitely check out this CD.

This CD brings me the beauty and peace hidden in the Amazon Forest. It shows the deepness of the innocence of the Brazilian Native Indians that survive in the Amazon Rain Forest. If you hear this CD, you will be able to hear the music of the last human beings living in the paradise. Marlui Miranda with her beautiful voice and tremendous talent has saved some jewels for us. A primeira vez que eu escutei essas músicas, num especial da TV Cultura, eu fiquei arrepiado, emocionado. Não imaginava tamanha riqueza cultural no meio da floresta. Mas, afinal, por que não? Esses índios são os únicos sobreviventes do paraíso. Abençoados por Deus e bonitos por natureza. Obs: Estive atrás deste CD por 5 anos, e não consegui encontrar em nem uma loja em São Paulo. Só consegui comprá-lo pela internet. É uma pena ser tão pouco divulgado.
