I've never read a 100+ page book in one day before, but this one was so fascinating I just couldn't put it down. Author Joe Conley has been on our TV screens for decades and it's terrific to finally read his life story in his own words. The rest of the book moves along at a good pace, but he slows down when talking about his years as Ike Godsey on "The Waltons" TV show. He goes into more detail there, giving us insight into the making of this wildly-popular series and the fine actors who were such an important part of it. You'll learn some surprising things in this book - the very lucrative second career that Conley had while working on the series, the form of entertainment that opened doors for him in the 1940s, the member of the Waltons cast that teamed with him in a traveling song-and-dance routine, and much more. "Ike Godsey of Walton's Mountain" is an excellent book that I would recommend to any TV fan.

Well done timeline of Joe's climb to fame. Not much about his children at all. All business. Very little about Walton's Mountain. I purchased this book as I do every book about WM. ie all of Earl Hamner's books etc. So I was disappointed that what little was written about doing WM was not complimentary except his frienship with "Ben", Eric Scott. If your a WM fan and looking for inside info, etc -keep looking!

For fans of the TV show "The Waltons" this is an interesting read. Don't expect too many behind the scenes stories we haven't heard elsewhere in Earl Hamner's recollections or other Walton on-line sites. That was the kind of disappointing part of the book. Mr. Conley certainly has lead an interesting life and his armed forces stories and pre-actor memoirs are a fun read as is the rest of the book.

I chose this rating because of the content of the book, the easy flow of what Joe was trying to convey to it's readers and I loved reading every page. I couldn't put it down. I loved reading about the real life of Joe Conley and then how he intertwined that with his stories of how he got to be Ike Godsey on the Walton's. Boy, am I glad, no one else could have done it. Get the book, you won't be disappointed!

I really enjoyed this book. I always enjoy the stories of Walton's Mountain. And I really enjoyed the stories of Mr. Conley's real life. He seems to be as nice a guy as Ike Godsey.

I think the title of this review might be a more accurate title for the book. If you are interested in Walton's Mountain and nothing but Walton's Mountain, I think you will be disappointed. Ultimately of course that's why I bought the book, too, of course (and I'm sure why everyone but Joe's friends and family buy the book, because that's how most of us know him).

I guess in my fantasy land I'd really like to read more about what it was like being on a hit show and still trying to live your life, what it was like working in such an ensemble cast -- did folks get along or was there a lot of bickering over who got more close-ups and storylines etc., did they have personal reactions to some of the stories, what was it like working with so many young kids in the earlier days especially, what was the atmosphere as "Grandpa" died, "Grandma's" participation became limited after her stroke, and "Mama" and "Daddy" more or less left the show, etc.

You won't find that book here. (Oh, some other Walton's cast member, won't you please write that book?)

However, I found the book engaging nevertheless. Joe Conley has quite an interesting story to tell, and of course you're willing to listen because you know where it's leading. This man worked *hard* for every bit of success he had and he earned every bit of it. It was fascinating to read how he worked various bars and clubs, mostly singing as I recall, working on his schmoozing and meeting people who would later help him get in the door for various roles. For several years now I've really thought that had I lived another life...had a few flukes of circumstance been different, I might have wound up in that arena, writing or perhaps even directing.

I enjoyed the character of Ike Godsey on the TV show The Waltons, and when I heard that he'd written a book, I was interested in reading it. I was disappointed in the book. It had some interesting information about Joe Conley in it, and while I enjoyed reading about his life, it certainly didn't focus on his time on the Waltons. Plus, I have to say that the book was poorly written. I assume he had a ghost writer or someone like that, but the book did not flow. Also, I found at least four spelling errors, which in this day and age of spell check is amazing! The one thing that I do think it offered was a view into the life of a moderately successful actor, and the ups and downs of that sort of career.
