This review is from: Ike and Tina Turner: Rollin with Ike and Tina Turner Live (DVD)
Not really a live concert performance, this DVD contains a collection of clips from (mostly) European TV shows in the 1970's. Not all are great quality, and many feature ridiculous psychedelic effects, which do not suit the music. Still, most of them were recorded live, or at least with a live vocal on pre-recorded tracks. Tina and the Ikettes are sultry, as always, and Ike sizzles on guitar. The disc includes two contrasting versions of "Proud Mary", and an exciting rock version of "River Deep". (Ike constantly re-interpreted this tune, which he originally had nothing to do with. Phil Spector would not let Ike anywhere near the studio--cutting his masterpiece live in the studio with members of the legendary "Wrecking Crew" session band.)Most of the other tunes are covers of assorted rock and soul hits of the day, including two by John Lennon, one by Otis Redding/Aretha Franklin ("Respect"), and a funky version of Tina's "Acid Queen" from the film version of "Tommy". Running time: about 45 minutes, all color. Good mono sound, with generally strong bass. The last six tunes, from "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert", are very grainy. Four-page insert contains some nice small color photos but does not identify the telecasts or dates. Track 1 is obviously from "Music Laden" (West Germany), and I think the next two are from "Beat Club" (also W. Germany).
