I was 13 years old when I bought my first Tina Turner record in 1984 named "Private Dancer". As many others I didn't know at the time that she had been recording for 25 years already. In my mind Private Dancer was her debut album... So was I pleasantly surprised when I visited a large record store and saw so many Tina Turner records filed under "T". "The Ike and Tina Turner Show vol 1" and "River deep mountain high" were the two records I decided to take home. Looking back at it now, I did make a good choice...Especially her versions of "You are my sunshine", "something's got a hold on me" and "Tell the truth" are amazing. This disc shows that Tina can make any song sound like it was written for her and the disc also shows that the Ike and Tina Turner revue had some other great artists touring with them. Guest performances include the great Vanetta Fields. You get also the Vol.2 disc and all this for the price of one CD. My vinyl copy has been completely worn out by 2000 so this CD release is like a gift from heaven ! "The Ike and Tina Turner show Live" sounds quite rough compared to the pop material she sings now and fans from her 80's and 90 's material may not like it, but for me it is one of the greatest records she has ever done.

Listen to this two "live concerts" from mid-1960's and one can understand clearly why it took almost 10 years before Turners finally hit the big time:they were,to put it simply,to raw,brutal and unpolished for mass audience.Lacking their own hits,in live concerts Turners were covering everybody from Sam Cooke ("Good Time"),Etta James ("All I Could Do Was Cry","Something's Got A Hold On Me"),and Jesse Hill ("Ooh Poo Pah Doo") to Ray Charles ("I Can't Stop Loving You","You Are My Sunshine") and Isley Brothers ("Twist And Shout").While Ike's guitar playing was burried somewhere in the background,Tina sounded breathless,raspy and too much chest-beating rather kills the songs.(Compare her with Etta James original version of "Something's Got A Hold On Me") While they show was almost as popular as James Brown's in black circles,Turners were never able to cross over in the white market and when it did happen,it was with the help from The Rolling Stones,but until then Turners became high-polished act,as "Live At Carnegie Hall" or "Live At Olympia 1971." are clearly showing.This CD doesnt represent Turners in the best light,but it gives an interesting look into early soul music,the way it was preformed live in front of admiring audience.
