4.0 out of 5 stars Great case, but may require some additional prep before use., May 12, 2011

This review is from: Ikelite 5610.02 Underwater Video Housing for Pure Digital Flip Ultra & UltraHD (2nd Gen) (Misc.)
I've used this case a few times now diving in some reservoirs in Colorado as well as the Great Blue Hole off the coast of Belize. At first, everything worked great. On my second boat dive of the day in Belize I started having a hard time pressing the record button on the Flip. I've seen other reviewers mention this same issue. Unfortunately, it wasn't something I could fix while underwater or on the boat that day. My third dive of the day was without video because the plunger for the record button would no longer reach the buttom on the Flip! I've heard other reviewers state that placing small amounts of cardboard around the mounting points for the Flip inside of this case will move the Flip camera a little closer to the plungers and eliminate this problem. It's unfortunate that you have to resort to this but I'd do it right away so you don't get stuck like I did.

That issue aside, this case worked great at depths to 130 ft. I highly recommend an external light while diving greater than 30-40 feet, particularly if you're trying to shoot close-ups of reefs, otherwise you'll lose some of the color. Definitely a great way to take your easy to use Flip and capture HD video underwater. You can focus on your dive without having to worry about a myriad of buttons and toggles.

Housing arrived on time. Took it diving the next weekend in a cold northwest Ohio quarry. Worked well, no problems. Really going to need the wide angle lens attachment, which costs more than the housing. That's just the way underwater video goes.

This review is pretty simple - it works. I have had it to 100' and a dozen dives so far.

Ikelite is the leader in underwater housings and makes quality products. The housing is easy to open and close yet not likely to accidentally be unlatched underwater. The latching system feels very secure. With a cheap adapter, underwater lens attachments can be added to the housing. Ikelite also makes a tray and mounting arm for adding external strobes.

The only drawback is that at depth the on/off button sometimes has to be pressed very hard to activate the camera. I solved this by putting a piece of cloth in the housing before inserting the camera, bring the camera controls a millimeter closer to the housing buttons.

The housing costs more than the camera but it is about half the cost of most Ikelite housings.
