Time to awaken the dragon! February 20, 2005
By Dave
Well, this series still continues to entertain me. Although this volume wasn't nearly as action packed as the last one, it was nonetheless an interesting watch due to the increased development of the characters and interactions among them. You see more to Ryofu than simply being a super strong, bisexual nympho, and you learn that under all her risque silliness, Goei is actually a very caring mother concerned for the well being of her only child, Hakufu. And then there's Ryomou...I just keep liking this girl more and more with each episode. You even see her actually smile a couple times! The interaction between her and Hakufu was especially entertaining for me. It's amazing to see how much their relationship has developed ever since their intense first-meeting battle back in vol. 1. I also felt a bit of pity for the fighters because these episodes really emphasize how bound they are to the fates of their ancient warrior souls, even though they may try to fight against it.

For those of you who love fanservice, you will not be disappointed with this volume--with a hotsprings episode as well as a pool episode, the FS is virtually nonstop. And for those of you who may hate FS, you've been warned. The last episode ends with a major cliffhanger as Hakufu is challenged by a fighter who she may end up loosing her life against, the hot-blooded Ukitsu. So it looks like the next and final volume's gonna start off with a bang! I'm looking forward to it. I just hope the ending of this series will at least be decent.

The extras include the usual (trailers, art-gallery, etc.) as well as a promo video. I also found the hidden outtakes--after you select "extras", push play while Hakufu does her twirl and kick in the screen. Funny stuff.

Needs more fanservice February 6, 2007
Why not. That is one of the mainstays of this series. You get good looks at Hakufu and Shimei in the nude. However, no Goei at all, and Ryofu only form behind. Admittedly this volume ramps it up significantly, but if you are going to do something like this series, with females regularly going about naked, don't get so squeemish about it. Just show more of the female characters topless or in the nude.

LETTING HAKAFU FREE November 4, 2006
By Sesho
Goei, Hakafu's mom, has always tried to deny her daughter's fated end of dying a young death, but in this volume she begins to doubt that course and wonders if instead of keeping her safe, she has undercut her abilities and left her even more vulnerable. With this in mind, she takes Hakafu, Kokin, and Ryofu on what is at first a relaxing trip to a hot springs, but turns into a training session with an old martial arts master named Chokou. While at the springs they run into Ryofu, Totaku's ex-bodyguard and lover who has turned against him in order to exercise her freewill. We also get our first glimpse at the girl who killed Hakafu in a previous life and plans to repeat the feat again!

Ikki Tousen is a series that does not work well in 3 episode installments because the effect of its plot is cumulative and does very little in bits and pieces. Probably, the best way to look at it would be to watch all 13 episodes in a row, if humans could stand such eyestrain. The point that has begun to change in this volume and that will become even more clear in Volume 4 is the will of some characters to not be bound by the fates of a storybook and the deeds of long dead warriors. We also begin to see how much Hakafu's mom loves her, even though the two are usually involved in insult matches and oneupmanship. This show is becoming more interesting.
