This review is from: I'll Always Get Up (Hardcover)
I first read this book when I was in college back in the early eighties. I have always enjoyed reading about the lives, thoughts and experiences of sports figures, whether in fiction or non-fiction. Former Washington Redskins running back Larry Brown tells a cross-section of his life story that covers many of the highlights of a fine athletic career (amateur and professional). The book is just a straightforward life story, told in a conversational style. Brown details the obstacles he had to overcome in order to make it in sports and in life. If you're not a sports fan or a former athlete, you may not be able to appreciate it too much. Keep in mind that it was written in the early 70's, and tried to appeal to a general audience. I loved it.I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan, and I was at the time I first encountered this book. I was able to shake off my perpetual disgust for "that team" from D.C. long enough to fully appreciate what I was reading. Took a supreme effort of will at my young age, but it was worth it. |
