5.0 out of 5 stars Or I'll Dress You in Mourning - Review, October 10, 2010
This review is from: Or I'll Dress You in Mourning: El Cordobes (Paperback)
Or I'll Dress You in Mourning is a wonderful book full of history and vividly painted pictures of individuals. The book will both intrigue and enthrall the reader. At first glance the book is not what it seems. People assume that the story is only about bullfighting; however, it is so much more than that.
This wonderful tale is about the struggle of a little boy's dream and struggle to be the best bullfighter in the world. He is El Cordobes or Manuel Benitez and he did become the greatest, most famous bull fighter in the world. In addition it is the powerful story of Francisco Franco's rise to power over Spain's ruined country. The book pivots forwards and backwards between each individual's lives and their influences.
This book is a snapshot in history showing the fall of the Spanish political system, the very bloody civil war and the rise of a new government. The authors do a fabulous job of interweaving all the parts and characters virtually seamless. Every person and event has a purpose pertaining to the two main characters of the book.
The best part of this story is that it does not read like a piece of non-fiction. The characters are straight out of any author's imagination and the setting could not be any more vivid.
