The Basic Christmas CD,
By Neal C. Reynolds (Indianapolis, Indiana) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: I'll Be Home for Christmas (Audio CD)
Crosby is an essential in any Christmas CD collection. He first recorded Silent Night and Adeste Fidelis in 1935, only on condition that his royalties go to charity. At that time, it seemed inappropriate for popular singers to sing religious Christmas songs. The reception was so strong that he began featuring both carols and modern Christmas songs on his annual Christmas broadcasts. Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" was first performed by Bing on an overseas tour during WWII, entertaining our troops. And the first popular Christmas album was Bing's. So his first recordings of Christmas songs paved the way for Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennet, Elvis Presley and all the others since. The phenomonal success of his "White Christmas" inspired the greater output of modern Christmas music. And his early album started the trend that we see today where almost every performer has a Christmas album. For sheer listening pleasure, an album that includes Bing's renditions of "White Christmas", "Adeste Fidelis", "Silent Night", and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" (with the Andrews Sisters) is a must.
