5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for College Students
When given this book, I thought I didn't need it. College, no problem! Well, my first lesson in college was that I was wrong. I did need this book. Doors Open from Both Sides, is a must have for not only college students, but also for parents. After reading through this book I learned that I wasn't the only one going through all these emotions that I had never before...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for College Students, April 18, 2003

When given this book, I thought I didn't need it. College, no problem! Well, my first lesson in college was that I was wrong. I did need this book. Doors Open from Both Sides, is a must have for not only college students, but also for parents. After reading through this book I learned that I wasn't the only one going through all these emotions that I had never before felt, that I wasn't the only one who was sacred, anxious, nervous, excited, and thrilled all at the same time. The thing is, I didn't just learn that other college students shared my feelings, but that my parents did too. In there own way, they were riding an emotional roller coaster right along with me.

The greatest part about Doors Open From Both Sides is that its not written by some doctor who probably doesn't even have kids, but it's written by a parent and child who experienced all these feelings and dealt with all the issues. It is the true story of a parent/ child relationship that everyone can relate to.

Going away to college, coming home for the first time, and growing up, are all issues that can be dealt with with a little patience and understanding. Door Open From Both Sides, gives that understanding, along with some tips and pointers that are realistic and helpful.

Keep this book in mind for anyone you know that may be going away to school or that has a child going away. Makes a great graduation gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deftly written and highly recommended reading., March 22, 2002
Deftly co-authored by the mother/daughter team of Margo E. Bane Woodacre and Steffany Bane, Doors Open From Both Sides is a parent/student guide for navigating the emotional transition to college and describes the full array of new challenges facing both the parent and their child from college acceptance to graduation. Drawing on their own personal narratives, as well as the experience of other students and their parents, Woodacre and Bane have created a welcome guide that will enable families to cope with the unique pressures of a college student that can hold far more emotional trauma that might be commonly expected. The text is "reader friendly", sensible, pragmatic, practical, and strongly recommended reading for every parent with a college bound student, and ever child leaving home for their first big academic adventure and independent campus oriented living experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential tool every parent can't afford to be without, April 3, 2006
By
This review is from: I'll Miss You Too: An Off-to-College Guide for Parents and Students (Paperback)
This book was wonderfully insightful. As a single parent with a beautiful intelligent young girl I had many questions that were eloquently answered by the suggestions in this book. There are not many books out there that offer the point of view that this one does. It helped me immensely. It helped bring me and my daughter closer and aided in the confrontation that was inevitable because it eliminated any aggressive behavior due to fear. It brought to my attention the questions that you forget to ask or are unprepared to answer. This book was a great communication guide for me and my daughter to open the doors of what may be expected in this difficult but necessary transition. I am confident of the authenticity of this book and how the advice given really will pertain to your experience with your loved one. Every parent wants to be as prepared as possible in lives huge alteration's for me it was relieving to have material such as these book to make the inevitable progression of a youths education a smooth and healthy one. This book is a brilliant example of how the skills of parenthood have excelled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every highschool child and mother should read this book, April 3, 2006
This review is from: I'll Miss You Too: An Off-to-College Guide for Parents and Students (Paperback)
Best book I've ever read! Most insightful book - every single parent and child should read this prior to college! I am my parents only daughter, so going away to college was tough on my mom and my dad. I only wish there was a book like this out when I had graduated years back. My own mom cried for a good 4 days when I left and then gave me guilt trips and we fought all the time on the phone for no reason (or that was what i thought of then) - her little baby was growing up and I wish she read that book because all I wanted was for her to treat me like an adult, all I wanted was alot of things, things that I thought couldnt be explained, but after reading this book - it makes sense now, everything makes sense. This book can be applied to any kind of person going to any school, whether it is a large public school, or a small private school, or a state school. The point of the matter is that leaving home and entering a new world of adulthood when there is very little transition is hard. Hard for the parents and hard for the children. My little cousin is going to off to college this fall to a public state school half way across the country. I gave this book to my aunt and cousin to read - quote from my cousin "i cant wait until college and to learn how to deal with my parents FINALLY, I read it in one sitting". I sat around the kitchen table with my family discussing how profound this book actually is,,, and how it can actually change your life. I can't wait for a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Opening Doors opened my eyes, April 18, 2003

I rarely write reviews, but in the case I found it importnant. Opening Doors is the most thought provoking and helpful book I have ever read. Recently sending my own child off to college was in one word difficult. But through this book I was able to realize that seperation while inevitable doesn't have to be the end. More so a great beginning. I highly recommend this book to any parent fearing the moment when they have to let their children go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real stuff; not adults writing down to kids, May 12, 2006
This review is from: I'll Miss You Too: An Off-to-College Guide for Parents and Students (Paperback)
There is a great line in this book; at a moment of despair, Steffany says `I was one with the car.' It's great because no adult would ever write that; we tend to filter ourselves. This sounds like a kid, dealing with the real emotions of leaving home.

There is so much literature about the students leaving, but so little on how the parent/child relationship is effected. Margo has done a wonderful job of honestly addressing the real issues involved when your child goes off to college.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turbulent Passages, July 24, 2007
This review is from: I'll Miss You Too: An Off-to-College Guide for Parents and Students (Paperback)
The authors of "I'll Miss You Too" offer terrific perspectives and invaluable advice to help both parents and college-bound students navigate this turbulent passage. Too many parents and students are ill-prepared for the emotional turmoil that can begin to overwhelm both parent and student. My husband, son and I were caught off-guard by what we later learned was typical--our son departed for college with high expectations, but soon encountered significant adjustment challenges--trials that impacted his academic record and caused great distress to all. More recently, when our daughter was facing the same transition, we no longer had to make it alone and unprepared. "I'll Miss You Too" was there to guide us and offer support to our entire family. Happily, our daughter successfully completed her freshman year, thanks to this very savvy and to-the-point book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good to know my feelings are shared!, May 6, 2003
By
Sandra Bascove (West Palm Beach, FL, USA) - See all my reviews
How I wish I had known about this book two years ago when my daughter left home for college! I was happy for her starting a new phase in life; however, shortly after she left I felt lonely and abandoned. I didn't express my feeling to her during her infrequent phone calls and I felt guilty having these feelings. After reading "Doors Open From Both Sides" I realized my feeling were not unique and I started questioning my friends who claimed similar feelings. Next, I had a long "visit" with daughter (using some suggestions in the book). This dialog helped clear many feeling that were lying dormat for years (my daughter is now a junior). I have since given a copy of this book to my sister and two friends. It's great to know that these feelings are shared by others. Hopefully, by reading this book while your child is in their senior year, you can be prepared for the transition!

5.0 out of 5 stars A 5 Word Definition For Communication, April 19, 2003
By
Andrew Costello (Annapolis, Maryland) - See all my reviews
The title of this book, Doors Open From Both Sides, is a great 5 word definition for communication.

It's an eye-opening book to the issues and surprises that parents and their kids ought to look and then talk about before and after getting into college. It's personal and practical - especially because it gives insights and observations from both sides: a daughter and a mom. As I read the book I could hear both of them talking to each other in the same room - because they learned to be on the same page - especially by writing this book together. A good read.
