I'll Not Be Getting Over The Disappointment, August 7, 2011
This review is from: I'll Be Over You (Audio CD)
i'm a huge Coryell fan, but in my opinion this album should be avoided by any fan of the main body of his work.... it's pure tripe... laughable even. I shouldn't be surprised, as it's a CTI production, and like virtually every album from Creed Taylor's label since the 80's it's pure sugar-coated, sappy, cheese-riddled "love"-ballad garbage.... even when it tries to be bluesy, as with track 5, "St. Louis Blues".
I knew what i was in for the moment i heard the vocals on the opening track... but i sat through it, and my fears bore out. I want my 52 minutes back... not to mention my money.
Track 4, "Try A Little Tenderness", despite the sappy title, was a mild exception here... a fairly nice instrumental that actually featured Larry, as opposed to the majority of the rest of the album which leans far too heavily on the "smooth jazz" saxophonist.
Track 10, "Cumulus" isn't too bad either, but nothing special.
When you do hear Larry on this album he sounds far too much like he's trying to be a latter-era George Benson, than he does himself. The one exception is the last track, "Better Get Hit In Your Soul", where you finally get to hear Larry sounding like Larry... and it's ALL Larry, making it the best track of the CD.
the three decent tracks weren't enough to save this one for me though, and i wish I'd avoided it.
