Statuesque, flame-haired Martha was as fiery in performance as her tresses, tearing into a tune with all the zest of a rock-and-roller (in a pre-rockabilly era). Martha was the first solo female singing star to join WSMs Grand Ole Opry as a regular cast member (several months ahead of Kitty Wells, who came aboard in fall 1952).
