Editorial Reviews

2012 release from the Jazz vocalist often cited as the world's true "romance crooner" and proponent of all things love. I'll Take Romance consists purely of romantic standards- an homage to The Great American Songbook with tracks culled from several genres expressing the theme of romance. Featuring such gems as "That's All," "Taking a Chance On Love," "All of You" and the title track, Tyrell also covers a host of R&B classics, including the Etta James hits "At Last" and "Trust In Me;" Sam Cooke's "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons;" and Little Willie John's "Talk to Me."

(From VocalStandards.com review)

With his Concord Records debut album -- I'll Take Romance -- Tyrell delivers the romantic goods in boatloads.

Superbly produced, this LP weaves an interesting path through classic standards, R&B numbers and blues ballads ... capturing both the tortured and the joyous affairs of the heart.

The track list of classic and newer standards ride comfortably on the back of Bob Mann's wonderful "Bacharachian" arrangements ... and often his crisp, classic jazz guitar accompaniment as well. This is good stuff.

As expected...

Tyrell not only brings his distinctive vocal stylings to I'll Take Romance, but as you would expect he exercises his Grammy award winning producer skill set to great affect. Steve collaborates with long-time friends Bob Mann and Jon Allen on this, his first Concord effort ... rendering a best-of-breed production with a rich, round vocal track -- elegantly threaded in and around Mann's balanced scores.

The sound staging is both expansive and exacting ... Steve and every instrument in place, offering a warm natural clarity without appearing too forward or competing. Again, perfect balance ... very nice.

To put this production quality into perspective, I saw Steve Tyrell twice in 2011 at gigs in Austin and Houston. He performed all of these songs in those shows, and listening to I'll Take Romance in prep for this review was just like taking in another Tyrell concert appearance.

The guy can sing too!

We need to come up with a nickname for ST. Mel Tormé's vocal distinction made him into the "The Velvet Fog" ... Tyrell's sultry, smokey, bluesy vocal style is unique and equally distinctive. Somebody needs to get him "marketed up" with a cool nickname!

I'm so proud of Steve Tyrell ....... not that I'm his Dad, or his manager, but I did sit at a bar with him once after one of his fabulous shows at the 'Jazz Kitchen' in Indianapolis, so maybe that gives me some "bragging rights," at least. He paid me a great compliment over a drink that night by actually remembering a "list" I had done on Amazon, after one of his fine Columbia CD's had been released, that named my choices as "The Best Men (Musically Speaking)" inwhich I had ranked Steve Tyrell right along side Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Bobby Darin. And I'll stick with Steve's inclusion even more today, as well as the pride I have in him, for discovering Concord Records ........ or maybe that pride should be bestowed on CONCORD for discovering HIM! It's an ideal partnership, and I sincerely think "I'll Take Romance" is the BEST collection of songs he has ever recorded.
I've always admired Concord for preserving the sweet and beautiful voice of Rosemary Clooney with one fine release after another, right up to her "70th Birthday Celebration" and up to and including "The Last Concert." They recognize the longevity of truly REMARKABLE talent, and I don't imagine they'll ever let Steve Tyrell get away! This initial CD for that label finds Steve with the best orchestrations imaginable, and a certain maturity to the gravelly emotion and the clarity of a phrase, the perfect nuance of a word or a line, that declares his voice more perfect than ever before.
There is almost a wistful melancholy to his phrasing on "That's All" that gives new meaning to those lyrics ....

I've enjoyed Steve Tyrell's music for years; I own all his studio albums; and this is one of my favorites. It is always evident when a performer is as comfortable behind the microphone as they are in production, Steve's knowledge as a producer has helped him to know just what to bring to, or leave out of the sound booth, and it really shows through on this release. A few favorites are, "That's All", "Taking A Chance On Love" and "The Way You Look Tonight" and although many people believe that Etta James and Beyonce' raised the bar too high for anyone else w/ their renditions of "At Last" I would say, give Steve's interpretation a try, I believe it stands on it's own w/ the rest. I've enjoyed this purchase immensely; and if, like me, you are a fan from years back, or simply just discovering Mr. Tyrell's talent, what better selection to choose, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Beautiful, delightful songs and music that immediately bring to the fore a deep, soulful feeling so embedded in American's songbook.

He was the singer in Father of the Bride for a reason. His version of The Way you Look tonight is my favorite. I like it even more than Frank Senatra's. This is a collection of romantic ballads. Nice for ...dare I say it....a wedding.
