The Civil War has ended, at least for most people. Others are visited by the animated corpses of soldiers killed in the war, haunted by demons, or selling their souls for political power. Old-Horny foot, a demon of no-small-influence has unleashed Hell on earth and is making deals that will raise the south to power again. Only one man can stop him, an ex-confederate soldier, and his mule Sinner Man, who used to be a demon himself. Armed with a pouch of tobacco and a fiddle that can free the souls of the damned, Riles' on his way to send Old-Horny foot back to Hell.

Fools and fiddlers,

Not many fantasy novels have the post-Civil War south as a setting. In fact, this might be the only one. It is even more likely to be the only novel to have an overly-cautious demonic mule and a downright rash fiddler as the main characters ... not to mention the only one where being dead hasn't stopped Abe Lincoln from being in charge of the Union. If you are looking for fantasy so southern that you can taste the tobacco juice, this might be the book for you.
