Book Description

I’LL TAKE THE FAT ONE is a uniquely written fictional novel that interweaves a story of redemption, finding one's true self and ultimately love with an understanding of weight loss.

Dr. Fugita, a weight loss doctor, holds Friday night seminars on health related topics, in his clinic. His seminars are designed to educate clinic members how they can maintain healthy lifestyles which will help them lose weight and keep it off.

The following is an excerpt from a review given by Dr. Grady Harp, Amazon’s top book reviewer: “By incorporating the weight control information into a well blended story of finding one's true self, a solid love story, and a really fine detective tale, Shelton not only draws the reader into the hard facts he wishes to deliver, but does so in such a way that the seminars become personal experiences.”

The self-help part of this book is delivered in the Friday night seminars. You’ll learn about the Glycemic index and how to determine which foods are deleterious to your health and why. You’ll learn what you can do to live a healthier life. How antioxidants help deter illnesses, lap band surgery, heart disease, diet recommendations and so much more is discussed.

Review

Iris is young, wealthy, beautiful and single, living alone in Los Angeles. Since the passing of her father a year ago, Iris has gained 50 pounds. After her mother died, her father had been her only anchor. Now, unhappy, overweight and lonely, she has become a recluse, turning to food for comfort. Her world is spiraling out of control with eating binges and no one to turn to for support. Despair leads her to a weight clinic she found on the internet, run by Dr. Nori Fugita, whom she recognizes as one of her former instructors at UCLA.

Nori is an insecure, commitment phobic, womanizer, with a predilection for women who are needy and vulnerable whom he can take advantage of. For him, Iris is just another target.

After a series of events, Iris falls in love with Nori whom she thinks is the man of her dreams. But is he? Will she win his heart or will Nori shatter her dreams?

This is a story of finding one's true self, love and redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars Obesity: Pulling it all together April 5, 2012
Format:Paperback
There is a saying that if you want to make your audience really hear what you have to say, tell them a story. And that is exactly what C.D. Shelton has accomplished in this well written and imminently readable novel I'LL TAKE THE FAT ONE. Shelton is a Professor of Biology in Southern California, an avid believer in sharing information about physiology not only with his students but also with the population at large. As is evident both in the media and in simply walking around the neighborhood or the streets and malls of our cities, America is fat! There is an epidemic of obesity in this country that threatens the general health, and for all the reactive ads and gimmicks and medical interventions and surgeries that are available, few writers have found a way to bring the realities to light in a way that will alert the public to explore the truths that are being bandied about. That is what Shelton's novel does - instruct, encourage, warn, and entertain us all in one story.

Dr. Nori Fugita (he has a PhD in Physiology from UCLA) has been a hedonist until he opened a Weight Control Clinic (Nutritional Counseling, Exercise Planning, and Intervention) in Little Tokyo in Los Angeles. Once in it for the money, his life gradually changes as he defines his mission in life - to offer informed advice to people with weight problems. On returning from a business trip to Japan to speak to the Japanese Sumo Wrestlers Association he picks up a voice mail message from one Iris Fugiyama, a past student in one of Nori's nutrition classes who is desperate for help in losing the weight she has gained.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good story! March 28, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a story of finding one's true self, love and redemption. Story line is entertaining, The message of this book comes out very clearly in the six seminar topics that span the time frame of this novel: Mindfulness (being aware of one's own experience as it s happening with meditation and focus on the moment); Lap-band surgery (the procedure and the pros, cons and safety measures); How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off (weight gain is a balance between exercise and calories consumed - a survey of the glycemic index and its meanings); Myths and Realities (the gimmicks for instant weight loss and why they don't work - the `easy way out'); Risk Factors for Heart Disease (a discussion on lipids and cholesterol, antioxidants and exercise); and Obesity and Epidemic (an erudite discussion of obesogens, processed foods, the effects of pesticides, the role of BMI).
